Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Corbin of Corbin Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Corbin.

Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Yes, I started my career as a Medical Assistant on the orthopedic and infectious disease floor at Riverside Hospital in Ohio. I’ve always known that I wanted to work in medicine and to care for people. After graduating from the George Washington University PA School of Medicine, I began my career in Dermatology, but soon discovered my passion for Aesthetic Medicine and transitioned into that field in 2015.

I spent nearly a decade with a large plastic surgery practice, and when it unexpectedly closed, I took it as a sign that it was time to pursue my long-term dream of opening my own practice. I wanted to create a space that reflected my vision of luxury aesthetics, where the focus is on natural results, individualized care, and an elevated patient experience.

As a Mom of two young girls, it was also important to me to build a work culture that prioritizes family and fosters a supportive, welcoming environment for both our team and our patients. At Corbin Cosmetics, we take pride in delivering exceptional customer service and going above and beyond to make every patient’s experience remarkable from start to finish.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have certainly been significant challenges along the way: financial, physical, emotional, and personal. When we could not find the right space, we made the decision to create it ourselves with a full build-out. Around the same time, the previous practice I worked for closed unexpectedly, adding even more uncertainty. We navigated obstacles with permits, licensing, insurance, PA restrictions, and unforeseen setbacks such as leaks in the ceiling, falling blinds, construction delays, and more.

Shortly after we opened, my husband was laid off, yet he provided incredible support by stepping in full time to manage the finances of Corbin Cosmetics. Compounding the challenges, my Collaborating Physician was diagnosed with metastatic cancer and has sadly passed away. In addition, there were numerous administrative responsibilities, including setting up accounts, building our social media presence, creating a brand, adapting to a new EMR, developing endless forms, and spreading awareness of Corbin Cosmetics, all while balancing my most important roles as a wife and mother to our two young girls. I did not sleep.

Through it all, I have been fortunate to have a strong support system and an exceptional team by my side. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together. Opening your own practice is never easy, but with perseverance, teamwork, and dedication to your vision, it is absolutely possible.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Corbin Cosmetics?
We are a luxury aesthetics practice with an incredibly experienced team, offering a comprehensive range of services including wrinkle relaxers like Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify; dermal fillers for volume restoration; Sculptra for collagen stimulation; Kybella for fat reduction; Skinvive for skin hydration; resurfacing lasers; Broad Band Light treatments for pigment, redness, hair, and pore reduction; medical-grade skincare; chemical peels; microneedling; semi-permanent makeup such as eyebrows and lip blushing (voted best of Annapolis in 2024); spray tans; and professional skincare products. Collectively, our team has over a century of combined experience, and our priority is always our patients’ safety and best interests.

What I am most proud of is our team. I’ve learned that it’s not just the name on the wall, but the people behind it who define our brand and our team has truly thrived. With nearly 100 five-star Google reviews and a loyal patient base, our success reflects the dedication, expertise, and care our team provides. At Corbin Cosmetics, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service in a safe and welcoming environment.

We also love celebrating milestones with our patients and with our team. For example, we recently marked our one-year anniversary with special promotions, champagne, charcuterie, customized gift bags, cake, and more. Every detail including fresh flowers delivered weekly is thoughtfully curated to create an elevated and welcoming experience. Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s okay not to have all the answers, and it’s impossible to do everything on your own. Learning to delegate tasks, though really challenging, is essential. Seek guidance from those you admire, trust, and look up to. I am deeply grateful to the colleagues in my field who offered honest advice and support. Equally important is prioritizing your mental health. Launching a business is incredibly taxing, and having effective coping strategies is vital. Make time to go for walks, spend time outside, set boundaries around your workday, put your phone down when possible, and try not to only talk or think about work and your business. I’m still working on mastering these skills myself, and there’s always room to improve. Finally, believe in yourself. Never doubt for a second that you can accomplish everything that you’ve promised yourself.
