Inspiring Conversations with Matthew Wilson of Do Work Factory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wilson.

Hi Matthew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Years ago, while lifting at a Gold’s Gym in Maryland, I noticed small quotes and stories from famous bodybuilders posted inside the bathroom stalls. Those words stuck with me. They pushed me to train for my first bodybuilding show, which took me all the way to Venice Beach, California. That trip changed everything. I was completely mesmerized by the fitness culture and spent months then years thinking about how I could bring that same energy back to my hometown in Baltimore.

I ended up winning that show, flew home, and got to work.

What started as a college project turned into the foundation of my life’s work: a mobile gym trailer loaded with everything needed for real training. I built it piece by piece and traveled across Maryland training athletes, parents, kids, and seniors. That small idea grew into something much bigger , a mission to create a high-level, community driven fitness brand built on hard work and purpose.

I invested countless hours researching, traveling, and learning proper biomechanics, movement, and coaching. Everything I’ve learned is poured back into my clients and my team.

I started charging $20 an hour, hauling a barbell and dumbbells in my Honda Accord, bartending until 3 a.m., then training again the next morning. Every dollar was saved and reinvested. I bought used equipment, filled my basement during COVID, and when gyms reopened, partnered with Gold’s Gym Dundalk. With the help of my sister who has been by my side from the beginning and an incredible team that consistently goes above and beyond, we carried every piece of equipment up those stairs by hand, creating what’s now known as the Do Work Factory Studio.

Today, Do Work Factory inside Gold’s Gym is making a massive impact in our community. Our team covers all bases all ages, all experience levels, all shapes and sizes. We meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go. We train athletes, families, beginners, and seasoned lifters alike, building confidence and changing lives every day. With the addition of the HYROX Room, an incredible renovation at Gold’s Gym, and expanded space and resources, we are setting the standard for functional and performance-based fitness in our area.

Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be our best year yet. Along with our continued growth at Gold’s Gym, we are expanding even further with the launch of the Do Work Sports Complex, creating more opportunities for athletes, families, and the entire community to train, compete, and thrive.

This vision was built on sacrifice, resilience, and relentless belief.
We will never stop finding a way.
All of this work is dedicated to and in honor of my father, Terry Wilson.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacles I’ve faced weren’t equipment, money, or long hours—it was people doubting the vision before it ever existed. When I started this journey, I was laughed at, mocked, and told it would never work. My name was dragged through the mud. I had people try to buy my LLC instead of believing in what I was building. My mobile gym trailer was vandalized—tires slashed—simply because we were different and doing something no one else was willing to do.

Still, we kept going.

When COVID shut gyms down, we refused to stop. My team and I loaded the trailer and trained at over eight different locations throughout the pandemic. We faced constant pushback—threats, complaints, even police being called—but our focus never changed. We showed up for our people when they needed us most, and the community responded.

Those moments didn’t break us—they defined us. Every obstacle strengthened our resolve and sharpened our purpose. What started as resistance turned into momentum, and what was meant to slow us down only pushed us forward.

We don’t stop when things get hard.
We find a way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
