Inspiring Conversations with Maria Ortiz of Maria Ortiz Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Ortiz.

Maria Ortiz

Hi Maria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started photographing over two decades ago. Photography was my creative outlet. Slowly, I became serious about it and eventually went back to college to get my second degree – in professional photography. After I graduated, I instantly knew that portraiture was what I truly loved as I knew I was making a big impact on people’s lives.

Like many photographers, I photographed everything from weddings to maternity, newborns, and families. Eventually, I found my niche – High School Seniors. I have now been photographing seniors almost exclusively for 5 years. It brings me so much joy to photograph teenagers and truly make a lasting impact on these young minds. The sessions I provide are truly memorable experiences for them and their parents.

In the past year, I have also begun teaching and mentoring fellow photographers and this has been an amazing experience for me as I love sharing my knowledge and helping other photographers grow – especially those who are just starting with their photography business.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a pretty smooth road but a slow one to get to where I am now as a business owner and specifically a sought-after luxury senior photographer in my area. I love learning, so even though I obtained a degree in professional photography, I have never stopped taking courses from the best in the industry to perfect my craft and my business.

The biggest struggle by far was finding the confidence in myself to become a luxury senior photography business and price myself as one while creating the ideal business model. I think this is one of the biggest struggles for many small business owners because we compare ourselves too much and question our abilities and our worth.

Another slow struggle was niching down to just photographing high school seniors as I had been focusing on maternity, newborns, and family photography for many years. This required a complete rebrand of my business and to this day, this has been by far, the most effective large investment I have made in my business.

As you know, we’re big fans of Maria Ortiz Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very artistic and creative. I spend my time coloring, drawing, painting, and eventually with a camera in my hand. I was always a perfectionist and to this day, I strive to create the best work I can.
