Inspiring Conversations with Marcus De Leon of State Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus De Leon.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally moved from San Antonio, Texas. I met my wife, Tara, when we were both exchange students in Costa Rica, when we were in high school. She is from here and we stayed good friends for years. Once I was ready to get serious about life, I figured why not move to Maryland and start my life with her. When I got here, I started as a middle school Spanish Teacher in Anne Arundel County. I liked teaching and summers off, but after a few years, I was looking for a change. I found State Farm, as a great place for my skills, I use my ability to speak to people, problem solve, and have interesting conversation with people from all walks of life, whether in English or in Spanish. I work for an awesome agent now and cannot imagine working anywhere else.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles have always been there, but when you are going through them, you are not always aware. when i look back, i see how difficult it was to make the change from teaching to insurance. I try to keep a positive attitude and not focus on the struggles, and focus on the benefits of the struggle. Its like lifting weights. if you focus on how heavy it is, you will never be able to lift it, instead, adjust, use smaller weights and build up to it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the manager at State Farm Dovie Metzger in Annapolis Maryland. We specialize in people. I might sell insurance, but without people, none of it would exist. Bad things are going to happen in life, but its how we prepare for those curveballs, that show our resiliency. I help people make sure that if bad things happen in their car, to their home, or even their family members, they are prepared. At our office, we try and make sure that customers understand that we have their best interest at heart. You can buy insurance from a number of places, but at our office, you get a great group of people that want to help you get the right kind of insurance.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor and networking involves being good at one simple skill, listening. If you can listen, you can find a mentor, a friend, and great clients. Some of the best people to network with have similar interests, but that also may have interests in things that may be your weaknesses. My mentor is our agent Dovie Metzger. We have a strategy session most days, but not just about business, but about life. It is important to find out what others are going through currently, you might be the only friendly set of ears in their life today.
