Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Forbes. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Lindsey Forbes is a transplant to Pennsylvania from Sarasota, FL. She has lived in PA for 8 years now. She moved from Florida with her oldest daughter, Angelina. She now has two beautiful daughters! She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do as a full-time career. She had studied Law before moving, but became discouraged with the current state of the justice system and decided it wasn’t for her. She had over 13 years of experience in the service and retail industry.
But she knew that wasn’t a career choice she wanted to be in for life. In between working and raising her oldest, she found enjoyment in doing hair and makeup for fashion shows, and Pinup contests, and magazine shoots. Where she picked up skills and enjoyed participating in the photoshoots herself. Her family is full of hair stylists, barbers, special effects makeup artists, Art Majors. She thought to herself why didn’t she turn her passion into a job? Very soon after moving to PA, she enrolled in beauty school where she received her Cosmetology License.
She worked in two salons doing a lot of wedding hair and makeup. And a lot of men’s haircuts as the main men’s stylist in both salons. She landed her dream job at Diversified Cuts in Downtown Hanover gaining her dual license as Barber/Stylist. She found herself still doing weddings on the side and grew her own bridal business to fruition. She started what is now ‘Fades Beards and Beauty’ 6 1/2 years ago!
About a year ago, she came up with a second business idea of opening a Bridal AirBnB that had a built-in beauty lounge! Brides could rent the Airbnb as a hotel stay, and have services performed the day of in-house! She opened it in September 2021. She currently uses it as an Airbnb, photography studio rental, and Bridal Venue.
She has grown in her bridal business the past couple of years and she now utilizes other local artists to help with weddings! And is only hoping to grow more in the coming years!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not growing up in a small rural area has presented obstacles that most locally-born business owners don’t deal with. I didn’t grow up in the MD, PA, VA area, I came from 1200 miles away and knew nobody. I had to start from the bottom and grow my clientele and contacts by networking my tail off!
It took about 2-3 years to grow enough reputation and portfolio to start getting referrals, local inquiries, and a website up and running! Now, I am always actively searching for new contacts to reach out and help with wedding bookings.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fades Beards and Beauty?
I am a barber Monday-Friday. I do wedding hairstyling and makeup Fridays-Sundays. And I run the AirBnB full-time! Traveling from PA to MD, VA, DE, NJ for weddings from March to about the end of November.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t have time to really even read books like I once enjoyed doing. If I listen to any podcasts it’s self-help or crime investigations.
