My Name is Karim Zebdi the CEO/Founder of Vela Ranks. My story starts in August 2024 with no big investors, no safety net, just a belief that local businesses in the DMV deserved better than what they were getting online.
My first move was landing a contract as an SEO and Website Manager for True Ad Solutions, working with clients across New York City and Connecticut. That experience sharpened everything, from strategy and execution to understanding what it actually takes to move the needle for a business. But I knew I wanted to build something of my own, so I went all in.
To build my portfolio fast, I partnered with some of the DMV’s biggest content brands including Dronify DMV (226K+ followers) and DMV Eats (180K+ followers), which gave me real credibility and momentum early on.
Then came the moment that changed everything. I met Josh Howard, owner of Nova Demo Experts, a junk removal and demolition company, at a BNI networking event. He and his wife Kayla were running the whole business themselves, making around $70K a year, and their website was a broken Google site they had built on their own that was doing them more harm than good. They took a chance on me. I rebuilt their website from scratch in WordPress, configured their SEO from the ground up, and the results spoke for themselves. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth? Not even close.
Starting Vela Ranks was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and I would not trade a single moment of it. But let me be real about what that actually looked like.
In the beginning, I was doing absolutely everything myself. And I mean everything. I was out finding clients, running networking events, and pitching my vision to strangers while simultaneously building the Vela Ranks website from scratch, designing every brand asset including the logo, banners, and graphics, managing every single social media platform, writing captions, creating content, and posting consistently across all of them. At the same time I was building out SOPs, writing contracts, creating business documents, managing my own finances, and trying to deliver real results for the clients I was already working with. There was no team yet. There was no backup. It was just me, a vision, and an overwhelming amount of work that most people never see behind the scenes.
The days were long and the nights were longer. There were moments where I was running on pure adrenaline and belief because that was genuinely all I had. People see the results and the growth now but they did not see the 2am nights where I was still designing, writing, building, and planning for a business that was not yet where I knew it could be.
Then came the people. Building the right team is something nobody prepares you for. I learned the hard way that not everyone who says they are on board actually is. I trusted people I should not have trusted, invested time into relationships that did not serve the business, and had to rebuild certain parts of what I was growing because of it. That stings, but it also teaches you faster than any business book ever could.
The hardest part of all was learning to balance everything at once while staying disciplined enough to keep showing up every single day even when results were slow. The road has not been smooth. But looking back at where I started and where Vela Ranks stands today, I am genuinely proud of every obstacle I pushed through. Not just because of what we built, but because of who I had to become to build it. Every late night, every moment of doubt, every time I had to figure something out alone taught me something that no classroom or course ever could. Pushing through those hard seasons is something I will always carry with pride because it proves that with enough discipline, belief, and refusal to quit, you can build something real from absolutely nothing.
