Inspiring Conversations with Juan-Luis Panizo of Spanish Millennium

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan-Luis Panizo.

Hi Juan-Luis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never imagined I’d end up running a language school. My career actually started in economics and banking, but when the 2008 crisis hit, everything changed. I lost my job and had to reinvent myself. In the meantime, I started teaching Spanish — focusing on business and finance, because that was my world.

What surprised me was how much people needed it, and not just in banking. Professionals from all kinds of fields were looking for tailored Spanish lessons. I saw the potential, and more importantly, I discovered that I truly enjoyed teaching. What started as a temporary solution quickly became my passion.

Eventually, I couldn’t handle the demand on my own, so I brought in other teachers. That was the beginning of Spanish Millennium. Today we’re a small but global team offering online Spanish lessons for all ages and levels — from kids to diplomats to professionals — with tutors in Europe, Latin America, and the US. Having teachers in different time zones means we can teach almost anytime, anywhere.

We’ve grown into a multilingual school, also offering Portuguese, English, French, and Italian, but Spanish remains the heart of what we do — about 85% of our work. And while we’ve expanded, we’ve kept one thing constant: personalized lessons and close, direct communication with every student.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The pandemic was one of the toughest moments — like many businesses, we saw students drop out because people were losing jobs and feeling uncertain about the future. But at the same time, something unexpected happened: parents suddenly had kids at home all day, and many realized their children needed extra activities beyond schoolwork. That’s when our demand for kids’ classes really grew.

This business naturally has its ups and downs because it reacts to the economic situation of our students. For example, when there are government layoffs, we see our government clients drop off. When inflation rises, people rethink their priorities and cut back. Despite all that, we’ve managed to stay steady — in fact, we haven’t raised our prices since 2020, because we want our lessons to remain accessible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Spanish Millennium is an online language school that started with Spanish and has grown to include Portuguese, English, French, and Italian. Still, Spanish is at the core of who we are — about 85% of our work.

What sets us apart is how personal and practical our approach is. We don’t just teach grammar; we create lessons tailored to each student’s goals — whether that’s a lawyer preparing for clients in Latin America, a diplomat heading to a new posting, a young professional who needs Spanish for work, or a child starting to learn a second language. Our teachers are based in Europe, Latin America, and the US, which means we can offer lessons almost any time of day.

We’re also authors and publishers — we’ve released Spanish grammar books, professional guides, and children’s books that are available on Amazon. These resources extend learning beyond the classroom and give students — and even independent learners — practical tools to keep improving.

We’re known for our one-on-one attention and direct communication. Students don’t feel like they’re dealing with a faceless platform — they have real teachers who know their strengths, their goals, and even their struggles. That human connection is something we’ve never wanted to lose, even as we’ve grown.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve stayed true to our identity: a small, dedicated team that delivers high-quality, personalized lessons. In a world where so much of education is becoming automated or standardized, we combine the best of both worlds — the flexibility of online learning with the warmth and adaptability of real, experienced teachers.

What I’d love readers to know is that Spanish Millennium is for everyone: professionals, diplomats, students, and kids. Whether you want to advance in your career, prepare for life abroad, or give your child a head start, we’ll design a program around your needs.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me are human connections — family, friends, and the relationships we build along the way. For me, peace and happiness come from those bonds. I try to use every opportunity to connect with people, create meaningful links, and share whatever success I have with others.

At the same time, I’ve learned that none of that is possible without health. Taking care of myself — eating well, working out every day, and maintaining good habits — has become a top priority. My goal is to live as long as possible, but not just in years — in quality of life, with the energy and health to keep enjoying those relationships that matter most.
