Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer Argueta of College Park Homebirth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Argueta.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into midwifery really started after I had my first two children. I realized that even the most well-informed and educated women often find themselves at the mercy of their obstetrical provider, nurses, and institution—and that the patriarchal nature of obstetrics frequently undermines women’s and families’ autonomy in their own care decisions. I knew I wanted to be part of changing that.

Over the years, I’ve worked in an accredited birth center, a hospital, and eventually opened my own practice. Each experience shaped my understanding of what women actually need. When I did open my practice, I was fortunate to have tremendous and invaluable support from midwifery colleagues. I also discovered something crucial: homebirth midwifery, especially in Maryland, is constrained by deeply rooted policies and misconceptions that make it genuinely difficult to provide the care families deserve.

What I’ve been able to build now with my team is something I’m really proud of. We’ve created a practice that merges the intimacy and personalized attention of in-home prenatal care, birth and postpartum care with the professionalism and efficacy of a larger, well-established practice. We’re able to provide that individualized, high-touch care while serving a broader community across Maryland and the DMV. It’s the best of both worlds—and it’s what I set out to create.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road—and I don’t think it could be in this field. We care for pregnant women and babies; complications happen. That’s just the reality of what we do.

Here’s what I’ve learned: success isn’t about avoiding every challenge. The goal is always healthy moms and healthy babies—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Beyond that we always strive for our families to feel genuinely supported throughout their care and feel empowered to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies through informed, autonomous decision-making.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re a midwifery practice that provides comprehensive prenatal care, birth services, and postpartum support—all rooted in the belief that women deserve to be active participants in their own care. We specialize in homebirth and work with families who are seeking a more personalized, family-centered approach to pregnancy and birth.

What sets us apart is really twofold. First, we’ve intentionally built a practice that honors the intimacy of in-home care while maintaining the professionalism and safety standards of a larger, established practice. We’re able to provide that highly individualized attention—the kind of continuity of care and personal connection that families often crave—while serving a broader community across Maryland and the DMV.

Beyond our model, what I’m most proud of is our team! From our amazing practice manager to our nurses and birth assistants who are also lactation professionals—we bring diverse backgrounds and deep experience. That diversity of perspective is crucial. We approach care holistically—recognizing that pregnancy and birth aren’t just physical experiences, but emotional and spiritual ones too. Every person on our team is committed to supporting our clients in that complete, integrated way.

Another cornerstone of our practice is precepting students in midwifery. I’m deeply committed to continuing this important work into the future, and bringing students into our practice is a big part of that. But it’s not one-directional—we gain so much from them. Our students bring fresh perspectives and diverse experiences that help us learn and grow. It’s a genuine exchange, and it keeps us sharp and connected to why we do this work.

What I want readers to know is that choosing midwifery care isn’t about rejecting medical expertise—it’s about a different philosophy. It’s about partnering with women, respecting their autonomy, and creating space for them to make informed decisions. That’s what we do every single day, and that’s what our clients deserve.

How do you define success?
I define success by our families. Did they feel that they were supported during their pregnancy journey? Did they feel that they were able to make the best decisions for their and their baby’s health through informed autonomous decision making? That’s what matters to me. When the last postpartum visit is over and they know that their voice and their choices were respected—that’s when I know we’ve done our job right. That’s success to me!
