Inspiring Conversations with Javon Burden of Beyond the Sale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javon Burden.

Hi Javon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey starts with survival.

I was homeless my senior year of high school—bouncing between friends’ couches, keeping my grades up, and trying not to let anyone see how bad things really were. I had academic scholarships lined up and always dreamed of attending Florida State University, but I knew deep down that I wasn’t mentally or emotionally ready for college. I needed structure. I needed stability. I needed purpose.

So I made a decision that would change my life forever—I enlisted in the United States Navy.
What started as a need for survival became a 22-year career in military service. I rose through the ranks to become a Senior Chief, traveling the world, leading teams, and learning how to lead with discipline and compassion. The Navy gave me more than a career—it gave me resilience, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility for others.

But the truth is, when I transitioned out of the military, I realized I had to start over. I had to figure out who I was without the uniform. That process wasn’t pretty. I walked away from ministry. I went through the fire in my marriage. I started therapy. I had to unpack years of trauma, perfectionism, and pain. But through it all, I discovered a deeper version of myself—one that could heal, hustle, and still serve.

Today, I’m a full-time Realtor® with Keller Williams Preferred Properties, helping buyers, sellers, and especially veterans like me navigate homeownership with clarity and confidence. I run several businesses, including a handyman service, a real estate YouTube channel called Beyond the Sale with Javon, and a creative Etsy shop. I’m also the President of the Hunting Ridge Community Association in West Baltimore, where I’m focused on creating change at the grassroots level.

My story is about more than real estate—it’s about redemption. It’s about choosing to grow, to give back, and to build a life I never thought possible. I went from homeless to homeowner, from broken to healed, from surviving to thriving. And I’m just getting started.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Especially when it comes to real estate, the road has been anything but smooth—but every bump taught me something valuable.

Transitioning into real estate after a long military career was a culture shock. There’s no manual for how to succeed as a Realtor®—you’re constantly navigating personalities, processes, and a saturated market. One of the biggest challenges for me was finding my way. At first, I fell into the trap of trying to mirror what other agents were doing—chasing trends, copying templates, trying to “fit” into someone else’s formula. But none of it felt authentic.

It took time (and a lot of trial and error) to realize that my power came from leaning into my own story, not someone else’s script. I had to figure out how to make this business work in a way that aligned with my values, my purpose, and my strengths. That meant building a brand rooted in service, creating educational content for buyers, and showing up consistently—even when the results were slow.

Finding the right brokerage and team was another challenge. The wrong environment can dim your light fast. I’m grateful now to be with Keller Williams Preferred Properties, where I have the support and alignment to grow on my terms.
And then there’s the work of nurturing your sphere—building trust, staying top of mind, and proving your value over and over again. It’s a grind. But it’s also a gift. Because every client I serve reminds me that I’m not just selling houses—I’m helping people find home, stability, and the fresh start I once needed myself.

The challenge isn’t just in learning the industry—it’s in learning how to show up in it authentically. That’s been my real breakthrough.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Beyond the Sale?
Beyond the Sale is more than a team name—it’s a mindset, a mission, and a movement I’m proud to be part of. Founded by my team leader, Lymar Curry, this brand represents everything I believe real estate should be: people-first, purpose-driven, and rooted in service. It’s not about transactions—it’s about transformation.

We help buyers, sellers, and investors across the Baltimore–DMV region navigate real estate with clarity, strategy, and heart. Whether it’s a first-time homebuyer, a military family using a VA loan, or a seasoned investor making their next move, we meet people where they are and guide them toward their goals with transparency and integrity.

What sets us apart is our holistic approach. We don’t just hand you keys—we educate you, empower you, and stand with you every step of the way. I personally bring over two decades of military leadership and service into my work, which means I lead with discipline, structure, and relentless follow-through.

Our partnership with Keller Williams Preferred Properties has been a game changer. KWPP is a powerhouse brokerage that pours into its agents. It’s a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning—and that environment has allowed me to thrive, spread my wings, and truly build a business that reflects who I am.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how we connect with our clients. We’re not just selling homes—we’re building legacy. My YouTube platform, Beyond the Sale with Javon, is one way I extend our mission—offering home tours, advice, and real talk about what it really means to own property, especially for those who never thought they could.

At the end of the day, Beyond the Sale isn’t just what we do. It’s who we are.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is providing real value to the people I serve—and doing it with passion and purpose.

I’ve lived a life where value wasn’t always given. I’ve had to fight for stability, advocate for myself, and rebuild more than once. So now, when someone puts their trust in me—whether it’s to find a home, sell a property, or navigate a new chapter—I don’t take that lightly. I show up. Fully. Authentically. Consistently.

Real estate, for me, is not about chasing commissions or closing deals. It’s about creating moments of clarity, empowerment, and forward motion for my clients. It’s about making sure they feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s about being the guide I wish I had at so many pivotal points in my own life.

Service isn’t a tagline—it’s a calling. And value isn’t just in what you give—it’s in how you give it. That’s what drives me. That’s what grounds me. And that’s what I hope every client walks away feeling.
