Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Lee.
Hi Jamal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Northeast Baltimore, where times were tough, but my family always made a way. I grew up inspired by Baltimore’s very own Carmelo Anthony, which fueled my drive for the game every day. I would eventually play for Rudy’s gay Cecil Kirk team that developed my love for the cultivating environments and coaching styles that I implement in my trainings today. I have many life-changing moments, especially having my daughter and having a stroke. Those events allowed me to reflect on God’s grace and allowed me to be more grateful for the life he has given me. It became my testimony; since then I have become a business owner, college graduate, mentor, and certified personal trainer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My stroke definitely was very hard on me mentally rather than physically. Having to readjust every day and not truly understanding why it happens to me, as I’ve been in shape all my life and a hard worker. Also having to go to 5 different colleges just to get my bachelor’s. I would say lastly, just dealing with inner-city life as you watch some childhood friends go to jail or die at an early age.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
MMTRA1N1NG is a Baltimore-based basketball training and player development brand focused on helping athletes improve both on and off the court. I specialize in skill development, including ball handling, shooting, finishing, footwork, game situations, basketball IQ, conditioning, and building mental toughness and confidence.
What sets MMTRA1N1NG apart is the energy and personal investment I bring to every athlete. My goal is to give 110% during every training session and make sure each player leaves better than they came. I don’t want athletes to simply go through drills; I want them to understand why they’re doing them, how they translate to real game situations, and how they can continue improving outside of our sessions. My philosophy is to “win the day” by getting better one day and one rep at a time.
Growing up in Northeast Baltimore also plays a major role in what MMTRA1N1NG represents. Basketball gave me structure, confidence, competition, and positive environments to grow in. Now I want to create that same type of environment for the next generation of athletes.
What I’m most proud of is that MMTRA1N1NG is becoming more than just basketball workouts. I’m building a brand centered around development, discipline, mentorship, confidence, and relationships with athletes. I work with players at different ages and skill levels, from younger athletes learning the fundamentals to high school and college players looking to take their game to another level.
Our motto is “Train Like Royalty. Perform Like A Champion.” That represents exactly what I want MMTRA1N1NG athletes to understand: prepare with purpose, carry yourself with confidence, give maximum effort, and be ready to perform when your opportunity comes.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are several ways people can work with, collaborate with, or support MMTRA1N1NG. Athletes and families can book individual or group training sessions, while coaches, schools, basketball programs, gyms, and organizations can connect with me for training partnerships, camps, clinics, team workouts, and other basketball development opportunities.
I’m also open to collaborating with local businesses, content creators, athletic brands, community organizations, and anyone who shares the goal of creating positive opportunities for young athletes.
Supporting MMTRA1N1NG can be as simple as following and sharing our content on social media, referring an athlete, attending an event, booking a training session, or helping connect the brand with new opportunities.
As MMTRA1N1NG continues to grow, I’m always interested in building genuine relationships with people and organizations that believe in developing athletes both on and off the court. The goal is bigger than basketball—it’s about creating an environment where athletes can grow in skill, confidence, discipline, and character.
