Inspiring Conversations with Jacqueline Broadus of Perfectly Elegant Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Broadus.

Hi Jacqueline, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello Everyone! What excites me most about what I do is when people tell me they are ready to plan their special event. My creative wheels start turning on how to design something unique and wonderful just for them.

As far back as I can remember, I have loved designing and giving gifts to people. I fondly remember having access to so many creative opportunities beginning with growing up watching my grandparents entertain and specifically being in the kitchen while my grandmother prepared for holidays and dinner parties.

My grandmother would start baking candies, cookies, cakes, and more the day after Thanksgiving in anticipation of Christmas. My grandfather worked with troops at a local air force base and would share those goodies with those who could not travel home for the holidays. Like my grandmother, the gift of creating something from the heart and giving it to others to see their joy is something I very much like to do.

Even more intriguing, is my great-grandmother who became an entrepreneur when she opened a bakery and ice cream parlor in the early 1900s. Additionally, she loved to entertain her friends and neighbors frequently by hosting card parties and dinner parties. It was always her custom to set a beautiful table, including creased linens, sparkling crystal glassware, highly polished silver flatware, and silver serving pieces. Her love for entertaining extended to hosting an annual Memorial Day cookout and family reunion. It seems inevitable that the legacy of entrepreneurism, entertainment, and design would be in my DNA.

My family’s strong ambition has played a significant part in and throughout my journey, which helped motivate me to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising. That opened the door for an opportunity to take a graduate course and travel to Asia to further immerse in colors, fabrics, patterns, and textures.

To help pay my way through college, I worked for a major banking firm and advanced to the head teller position. A couple of years after graduation, I went into the field of law enforcement, where I spent the majority of my career as an investigator and retired as a Command Officer. The work experiences served me well when I decided to start my own business after retirement.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anything but smooth. The challenges were inevitable and often many, resulting in moments of discouragement and self-doubt. However, I learned to weather the storm and push forward with commitment, determination, and focus. Over time I realized that the recipe for success was within me and always under construction.
