Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Gil Serchuk.
Hi Jaclyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my business as a side hustle in March 2018. I used to come home from my 9-5 and experiment with making hair products in the evenings and on weekends. I just loved to make things myself and enjoyed researching different ingredients to understand their benefits. My goal was to make products for curly hair that were simple and clean. Luckily, I’m married to an amazing graphic designer so he helped me with my logo, branding, and website. The first products I brought to market were our Hair Cleanser and Hair Cream. I had no money, so I just started making content on social media. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Instagram!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No journey is smooth, in my opinion. There are always bumps in the road, but we chalk them up to learning experiences. We’ve made mistakes with misprinting labels and booklets and needing to reorder them, which takes longer and costs extra money. We’ve had inventory issues where we were out of stock for months, and spacing issues, as the business grew it took over our house. There’s always something, but that’s what makes owning and running your own business so fun!
We’ve been impressed with Miribel Naturals, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Miribel Naturals is a line of curly hair products. Growing up, I had no idea how to care for my curls. I straightened them relentlessly with chemicals and heat. My hair was beyond damaged. After graduating college, I decided I didn’t want to manipulate my appearance anymore – I wanted to love myself the way I was meant to be. I learned to love my natural curls but still didn’t really know how to properly care for them. A few years ago, I joined Instagram, where I saw all these women with beautiful curls talk about their styling routines. I followed suit but quickly tired of the ‘product junkie’ mentality. I didn’t want to need a ton of products every wash day, nor did I want to constantly buy a ton of products. That’s when I decided to make my own products that are natural, clean, and offer simple wash day routines!
