Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Tillman.
Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always wanted to be a nurse—my mom was my inspiration. I dealt with eczema as a kid, and traditional medicine never gave me real answers. In nursing school, I took classes on alternative therapies and fell in love with holistic care. It made sense—it worked for me. I graduated nursing school in 2002.
I spent years in acute care, specializing in cardiac, thoracic, wound, and vascular care. I eventually became a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2016 and became a Surgical First Assist. But when COVID hit, I knew I wanted to help people in a deeper way—so I turned to Functional Medicine.
in 2021, I started healing my own body by getting to the root of my issues, and that transformation inspired me to help others do the same. In 2023, I decided to move forward with more formal educational process to learn more about Functional medicine and obtain my certification in it. I took one certifying program through Functional Medicine Academy and am now halfway through Institute of Functional Medicine certification process. once I have completed IFM coursework and sit for their board exam I will be Board Certified.
Personally, my journey hasn’t been easy. I left my family in Chesapeake, Virginia, for a marriage that turned out to be incredibly painful. As a single mom of four, I rebuilt everything—on my own terms. I was empowered to fulfill my goals. I completed my Master’s of Nursing graduate degree in 2016, started formal education for Functional Medicine in 2023, built my private practice (Functional Healing) in 2024, and found deep purpose in helping others reclaim their health.
Now based near the Maryland–Pennsylvania–West Virginia-Virginia border, I serve this area with holistic, root-cause care. I am passionate about my work and it is personal—it’s about REAL powerful healing, resilience, and giving people the tools to finally feel like themselves again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not smooth—it’s been a road of deep challenges, hard choices, and personal transformation; however I am incredibly grateful for my life experiences as I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I left my hometown and my family in Chesapeake, Virginia, for my first marriage, hopeful about a new life with what I believed was love. Over time, that relationship became emotionally heavy and toxic, and I knew I had to leave to protect myself, my children, my peace and rebuild my sense of self. My second marriage brought a different kind of turbulence—marked by instability–navigating the chaos of addiction.. Walking away from both wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. One taught me how to survive. The other taught me how to rise.
Starting over as a single mom of four, with no family nearby and limited resources, was daunting. I had to finish grad school, raise my kids, and build a business—often with no roadmap, just faith and determination. I had to be resourceful and resilient—navigating financial pressure, long days, and constant responsibilities. I leaned on faith, grit, and a few solid friendships to keep moving forward.
Those experiences shaped the way I show up in my work. I understand what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck in cycles that don’t serve you. That’s why I created a space where people feel seen, heard, and supported—not just in their physical health, but in reclaiming their wholeness.
But each obstacle shaped me into who I am today. My struggles gave me the empathy and fire to serve others. I understand what it’s like to feel stuck, unheard, and uncertain. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping others heal—not just physically, but emotionally and energetically too.
As you know, we’re big fans of Functional Healing . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m the founder of Functional Healing, a root-cause, integrative medicine practice I launched in October 2024. I created this practice because I believe people deserve more than rushed appointments and band-aid solutions—they deserve answers, healing, and someone who listens.
At Functional Healing, I specialize in functional medicine—an approach that looks at the why behind your symptoms, not just the what. I work with clients to uncover the root causes of chronic issues like fatigue, bloating, weight gain, hormone imbalances, brain fog, autoimmunity, pain, depression, anxiety and more. Through advanced lab testing, personalized nutrition, lifestyle support, and targeted supplements, I help people finally feel like themselves again.
What sets me apart is that I’ve lived this journey. I’m not just a provider—I’ve been the patient, too. My own healing at age 40 was the catalyst for building this practice. I started my certification path in Functional Medicine at 43 and have finished one certification, completing the second certification to become board certified. My personal experience fuels my passion to help others break free from the cycles that keep them stuck.
I’m proud to offer care that’s deeply personalized, compassionate, and empowering. Whether it’s through one-on-one consultations, group programs, webinars, or community events, my goal is always the same: to educate, equip, and support people in taking charge of their health—for good.
I offer free consultations to give people a no-pressure space to ask questions, learn more about what I do, and see if it’s the right fit. From there, clients can choose from one of my membership options, which are designed to provide layered support depending on where they are in their healing journey. Each membership includes dedicated one-on-one visits, ongoing accountability, functional lab reviews, supplement guidance, and personalized care that evolves as they do. Monthly memberships range from $83/month- $210/month depending on the support you want.
What sets me apart is that I’ve been in my patients’ shoes. I understand what it’s like to feel dismissed and exhausted, and that’s why Functional Healing is built on trust, transparency, and individualized care. My goal is to empower people with knowledge, tools, and support—so they can feel like themselves again, inside and out.
If you’re tired of feeling unheard or dismissed, I want readers to know there is another way—and that’s what Functional Healing is all about.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t know if I’d call it luck—maybe divine timing, alignment, or just the right people showing up when I needed them most. While I’ve worked incredibly hard to get where im at today and build my business, I’m deeply grateful for the people who’ve helped along the way.
Meeting Heather Tydings was a turning point—she connected me to opportunities and people that I otherwise wouldn’t have found on my own. She helped open doors that aligned perfectly with my mission and gave me a huge push forward. I’ve also had incredible support from others in private practice—therapists, dermatologists, chiropractors—who believed in what I was doing and started referring patients my way. That kind of support is priceless.
So while I wouldn’t say it’s all been “luck,” I do believe that when your heart is in the right place and you stay committed to your vision, the right people and opportunities tend to find you. And for that, I’m incredibly thankful.
