Today we’d like to introduce you to Funlayo Alabi
Hi Funlayo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Shea Radiance is a clean beauty brand born from a personal need and fueled by a passion for empowerment and community. My journey began over a decade ago when my two sons were struggling with severe eczema. Traditional treatments weren’t working, so I turned to natural solutions, specifically shea butter, a staple ingredient from my Nigerian heritage.
As I began crafting skincare remedies at home, I realized the incredible potential of shea butter, not just for my family but for anyone looking for effective, nourishing skincare. What started as a labor of love soon grew into a mission to bring clean, effective, and sustainable products to a broader audience.
While formulating products, I also learned about the lives of the women in West Africa who harvest shea nuts. These women, often the backbone of their communities, face economic challenges that limit their opportunities. This realization became a turning point. Shea Radiance’s mission expanded beyond skincare—we became committed to creating economic opportunities for women in shea cooperatives by sourcing directly and ethically from them.
Today, Shea Radiance offers a range of products that celebrate pro-aging beauty, clean ingredients, and hydration-focused care. We’ve grown from a kitchen experiment to a brand that empowers women worldwide—both through our products and by telling the stories of the communities behind them.
My journey is a blend of personal experiences, entrepreneurial growth, and a deep connection to community. It’s a reminder that when we lean into our purpose, the impact can ripple far beyond what we imagine.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to building Shea Radiance has been incredibly rewarding, but it hasn’t always been smooth. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges that have tested my resilience and shaped the way I approach both business and life.
Starting Small with Limited Resources
In the early days, Shea Radiance was born in my kitchen, where I handcrafted products to help my sons’ eczema. Transitioning from a personal project to a viable business was daunting. I had no formal background in product formulation or business, so I had to teach myself while juggling family responsibilities and limited finances.
Breaking into the Beauty Industry
The beauty industry is highly competitive, with established players and new brands constantly entering the market. Gaining visibility and convincing customers to trust a small, emerging brand was a significant challenge. Early on, we relied heavily on word-of-mouth and grassroots marketing to build our reputation.
Accessing Capital to Scale
As a Black woman entrepreneur, one of the most significant hurdles has been accessing the capital necessary to scale the business. Traditional funding sources often come with barriers, including bias and limited access to networks that provide equity or debt financing. We’ve had to rely on resourcefulness, persistence, and support from small business organizations to grow incrementally. While this approach has taught us resilience, it has also delayed our ability to scale as quickly as we would like.
Ethical Sourcing Logistics
Sourcing shea butter directly from women-led cooperatives in West Africa is central to our mission. While it’s incredibly rewarding, it comes with challenges, such as navigating complex supply chains, ensuring consistent quality, and addressing logistical issues. Building relationships with the women in these communities requires cultural understanding, time, and resources, but it’s a cornerstone of our brand values.
Balancing Purpose and Profit
One of the ongoing struggles has been balancing our mission of economic empowerment with the need to scale the business. Staying true to our values while growing a sustainable and profitable brand has required tough decisions and creative problem-solving.
Pandemic Disruptions
The COVID-19 pandemic introduced unexpected challenges. From supply chain disruptions to shifts in consumer buying behavior, we had to adapt quickly. It also reinforced the importance of e-commerce and digital marketing, which became key to our survival and growth.
We’ve been impressed with Shea Radiance, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Shea Radiance is a Black-owned, woman-led beauty brand dedicated to creating clean, effective skincare solutions that prioritize hydration, nourishment, and self-care. How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is seeing women win. Watching a woman step into her power, embrace her potential, and achieve her goals fills me with a deep sense of joy and purpose. It’s not just about the individual success; it’s about the ripple effect. When a woman wins, her victory often extends beyond herself—it inspires her family, uplifts her community, and opens doors for others.
This happiness comes from my own journey and the values I grew up with. In Nigeria, I saw women who were celebrated for their strength, wisdom, and accomplishments. They carried a quiet power that shaped their communities. I learned that when women succeed, everyone benefits. That belief has stayed with me and drives much of what I do today
