Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kafui Y. Doe.
Hi Kafui, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Dr. Kafui Y. Doe, and I’m a first-generation college graduate who grew up on the South Side of Los Angeles, raised with strong Ghanaian values that emphasized community, responsibility, and giving back. My environment wasn’t always easy to navigate, but even early on, I learned how to turn challenges into lessons rather than barriers. I’ve always believed in cause and effect; what you put into the world truly matters. That belief shaped how I showed up, how I treated people, and how I imagined my future.
I didn’t grow up seeing many examples of the paths I wanted to walk, so I learned how to create them. I’ve never been afraid to try, even when people told me something wouldn’t work or wasn’t realistic. Over time, that mindset became the foundation for everything I built.
While working in government and volunteering with nonprofits and community groups, I noticed something that stayed with me: so many people wanted to do meaningful work for their communities, often using their own time and money, but they were overwhelmed by systems that felt inaccessible. They had the passion and the ideas, but not the technical support or resources to compete with larger institutions. YAA Enterprise, LLC was born from that observation and from a desire to change that reality.
Creating this firm as the CEO allowed me to bring my lived experience, professional training, and sense of purpose together into something tangible, something that helps people move from vision to action. I’ve been able to extend that same approach into the classroom at Howard University, where I teach and coach the next generation of health leaders through applied learning. In that space, students don’t just learn theory; they engage with real-world challenges, build practical skills, and see how their knowledge can directly impact communities.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth, and I don’t think it was ever meant to be. YAA Enterprise started with a lot of heart and very little funding. Much of the early work was done pro bono or at very low cost, often supplemented by my own personal resources just to keep things going. As demand grew, we had to adapt, experimenting with contingency-based models and layering services to stay accessible while building sustainability.
One of the biggest challenges has been growing without giving in to external pressures to change our business model in ways that would pull us away from our purpose. As more organizations placed their trust in us, the demand for our work grew, and with it came a deeper responsibility to care for the people doing the work alongside me. We’re now at a point where the impact is visible, relationships are strong, and the mission is resonating. But growing in a way that stays true to our values requires unrestricted support, support that allows us to remain innovative, create sustainable opportunities, and not only build the capacity of our clients, but also invest in the next generation of professionals and leaders who want to do this work through a humanistic lens.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
YAA Enterprise, LLC is a project-based social-entrepreneurial management consulting firm designed to meet people where they are. We support public and private sector organizations, especially those working in public health, education, and community development, by helping them plan, implement, manage, and evaluate programs and services that truly serve their communities.
What makes us different is our approach. We don’t believe meaningful work fits neatly into a 9-to-5 box, because the issues our clients are addressing don’t either. We focus on outcomes, trust, and completion, not performative processes. Our work is rooted in a human-centered lens, where relationships matter just as much as results.
Many of the people we work with are under-resourced but deeply committed. Some are funding their work out of pocket. Some have small teams or are just getting started. We have had success in helping them grow in ways that feel healthy and sustainable, often with flexible models, reasonable fees, and, when possible, in-kind support. We also strongly believe in collective impact, connecting clients to partners, encouraging collaboration, and rejecting the idea that only a few can succeed. I have also created a nonprofit that continues expanding this framework through a multidisciplinary, collaborative venture approach. What I’m most proud of is that YAA Enterprise creates space. Space to learn. Space to ask questions. Space to build confidence. People don’t just come to us only for deliverables; they come because they also feel supported, respected, and seen.
At its core, YAA Enterprise exists because too many people are doing meaningful, impactful work without the business support they need to sustain it. This type of work is often framed as nonprofit work alone, but I’m intentional about showing that it can also live within a strong, values-driven business model.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t let anyone convince you that your vision is impossible. If you have the heart, the intention, consistency, and a willingness to learn, you can build something meaningful, even if it takes time. Focus on building a strong foundation rooted in trust, relationships, and integrity. That foundation will carry you further than speed ever will.
Be intentional about who you surround yourself with. Choose people who want the best for you and for others. I try to create and stay in environments that value peace, authenticity, and shared growth. Those things don’t always come with a price tag, but they are priceless when challenges arise. And challenges will come. Sometimes they’re the very lessons you need to grow and be resilient into what’s next. Stay focused. Learn from setbacks. Keep moving forward.
