Inspiring Conversations with Diane Bellamy of Beauty To The Block

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Bellamy

Hi Diane, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in Trenton, New Jersey, I was surrounded by hopelessness, poverty, and struggle, but nothing shaped me more than experiencing childhood homelessness and food insecurity. I know what it feels like to go to bed hungry, to wonder where you’ll sleep next. instead of letting those experiences break me, they birthed in me a deep compassion for others who walk the same path. In 2017, I took a leap of faith and became a first-time business owner, launching In His Image Hair Studio, a successful salon in Trenton, where I not only transform hair but also restore confidence and create opportunities. Yet, even as my opened my business I couldn’t shake the burden for those in my community still struggling with the same lack and insecurity I once knew. That burden led me to create Beauty to the Block, a nonprofit dedicated to serving young people and families in need, providing mentorship, resources, and tangible acts of love. From offering free hair services to providing youth with hygiene necessities and community outreach events, Beauty to the Block became more than an organization, it became a movement of hope. My life has come full circle, from experiencing poverty and uncertainty to being in a position to give back and create change. My journey is proof that where you start does not have to determine where you finish. I am living proof that resilience, faith, and purpose can turn pain into power.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there were struggles along the way. One of the biggest challenges was persevering mentally—learning to believe in something I had never seen growing up. When you’re surrounded by hopelessness, lack, and survival mode, it takes a different kind of strength to step into a new mindset and build something greater. Being a forerunner—creating opportunities that didn’t exist before, comes with its own challenges, but it has also been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. There were moments when I had to push past doubt, fear, and uncertainty, trusting that what I was building had purpose. It was a faith walk every step of the way, and my faith carried me. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about talent or resources, its about having the courage to keep going, even when the path isn’t clear. Every challenge, every setback, and every hard season became fuel for something greater, and I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything.

As you know, we’re big fans of Beauty To The Block. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Beauty to the Block is more than just a nonprofit, it’s a movement dedicated to equipping and empowering those in need to discover and display their beauty from within. Through spaces, services, and innovative events, we provide tangible resources and transformative experiences that uplift individuals, particularly youth in Trenton NJ.

We specialize in youth programming, offering support, hygiene necessities, and direct connections to community resources that help individuals thrive. But what truly sets us apart is our Three B’s: Beauty, Belonging, and Benevolence.

Beauty – We believe everyone possesses an internal beauty that deserves to be displayed, no matter their circumstances.
Belonging – We foster an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of background or experience, has a place. Benevolence – We serve from a place of compassion, generosity, and love, ensuring that every act of service is rooted in genuine care.

One of the things I’m most proud of about our brand is our commitment to inclusivity. Our hashtag, #WeAreTheBlock, reflects our belief that this movement is for everyone, not just one group, but the entire community. Whether you are receiving help, offering support, or simply standing in solidarity, you are part of the BLOCK with us. Beauty to the Block is a community-driven effort, and we invite everyone to be apart of the BTTB family.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is being outside, playing with friends from sunup to sundown. In spite of the challenges I faced growing up, my childhood was filled with laughter, adventure, and moments of pure joy. There was something special about those long summer days, running through the neighborhood, making up games, and just enjoying the freedom of being a kid. Looking back, I realize how much those moments shaped me. They taught me resilience, the power of community, and how to find joy even in difficult circumstances. I wish more kids today could experience that same sense of fun, connection, and freedom.
