Inspiring Conversations with Cynthia Johnson of Cindy J Cosmetic Labs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Johnson.

Hi Cynthia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was 15 years old, I had the desire to become a WNBA player after college. However, my chemistry professor saw science in my future. He encouraged me to look into cosmetic science since I was passionate about my hair and skin. That day changed my life! I knew I was destined to be a cosmetic chemist.

It wasn’t until 2014 that I learned about entrepreneurship. After college, my best friend invited me to a network marketing meeting. This meeting helped me see a different vision and a different view of my life. I wanted to own my own laboratory facility! I knew in order to expand my knowledge, I had to further my education and work for a manufacturing company.

In 2015, I became a full-time cosmetic chemist. I then enrolled in the University of Cincinnati’s Master’s degree program in Cosmetic Science in 2016. This is where the fun began! After graduation in 2018, I registered my business in the State of Maryland. My business was part-time since I was still a full-time cosmetic chemist. However, October 2020 became the highlight of my journey.

Not only was it my birthday month; but it was time to take Cindy J full-time! I left Corporate America and stepped out on faith with Cindy J. I am now in an 800-sq. ft facility helping numerous business owners start their own cosmetic lines.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were some obstacles I encountered as I continued to write my chapter. While working for one of the bigger contract manufacturing companies, I was told that I had to take down my Social Media when presenting my Company part-time to the world.

I was given an option, take it off Social Media or find another job. It was then that I realized I could not reach my goal of a full cosmetic service laboratory while working for this employer. So, I left the company and focused on my business.

My family was nervous because I walked away from a professional position that compensated me quite well. I continued to think to myself, “My gift will make room for me. In order to seek abundance, I must take that leap of faith.” Once I jumped, I started soaring.

Opportunities were knocking at my door. Blessings from God were pouring from left to right.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Cindy J Cosmetic Labs, LLC?
Cindy J Cosmetic Labs, LLC is a research and development organization for cosmetic brand owners. We offer custom formulation development in the hair care and skin care industry.

Our goal is to first educate; then formulate. Our mission is to extend access to innovative ideas to brand owners and indie beauty brands in order to develop a prevalent strategy for long-term success. Cindy J Cosmetic Labs focuses on delivering products that will benefit the customer and the target market.

We provide effective formulations and establish consumer understanding. We utilize social media marketing such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn by creating educational content. Because of COVID, consumers are looking for ways to enhance their self-care. Our content provides resources and formulation education to help with self-care needs.

I am also a Green Star Award Recipient sponsored by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. I created a Strawberry Cream Cleanser with blue light protection. The award was determined by the society’s assessment of the product’s novelty as well as its level of innovation in the formulation.

One key accomplishment of formulating a green product was the ability to maximize the natural components in the cleanser. The higher the Green Star rating, the “greener’ the product. Because of this award, clients who are looking for a more natural skin or hair care line trust my expertise in this sector.

I am also proud to be the 2021 Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) recipient from the University of Cincinnati. The award recognizes a graduate from the College of Pharmacy within the last ten years, who has made significant contributions to the college and/or the profession. I was also awarded the 2021-2022 Distinguished Alumni Award from Lincoln University’s Athletic Department.

In addition to receiving awards, I have made guest appearances as the keynote speaker at the Walker’s Legacy Science of a Woman brunch in New Orleans, the University of Toledo’s Cosmetic Science Society, Morgan State’s Young CEO Event, Startup Retail Summit Digital Conference and more.

The highlight of my recognition is the October 2020 feature in Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. The article highlighted Black Scientists, Doctors, and Entrepreneurs innovating the beauty industry. I am also proud to serve as Chair for the 2022 year with the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I find myself educating aspiring chemists and looking for ways to give back to the Baltimore community.

I would love to have middle school and high school students take a tour of my laboratory. During the tour, our team can teach them the basic understanding of cosmetic chemistry, and create a space for formulating.

We will also open up an internship program for students and aspiring chemists who are looking for entry-level experience in the field. Those who are interested in learning more, can visit my website or shoot me an email.
