Hi Chevelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After retiring from a 20-year career in the United States Army, I knew one thing for certain: I did not want to step into another career that would once again pull me away from my family. After years of deployments, long hours, and missed milestones, I was ready to build something that allowed me to remain present at home while still pursuing purpose-driven work.

The idea for JEK Travels took shape during a long drive from Colorado back to the East Coast with my husband. Somewhere between conversations about life after the military and what the next chapter should look like, the vision for a travel business was born. The name itself emerged on that road trip, rooted in family and the desire to build something lasting together.

Like many small businesses, the early days were not without challenges. The business started rocky, requiring persistence, discipline, and a willingness to learn qualities I credit to my military background. Through consistency and a commitment to service, JEK Travels gradually gained momentum.

Today, JEK Travels is supported by a loyal community of travelers who trust the brand to handle every detail of their vacations. That trust, is the true measure of success proof that a business built on integrity, care, and relationships can thrive long after its uncertain beginnings.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many businesses in the travel industry, JEK Travels faced its most difficult challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. As global travel came to an abrupt halt, situations arose that were far beyond the agency’s control border closures, airline cancellations, shifting government regulations, and supplier policies that changed overnight. In some cases, frustrated clients attempted to place blame on the agency for outcomes no one could have predicted or prevented, even going as far as trying to tarnish the brand during a time when the entire industry was struggling to survive.

Additional challenges came from a lack of personal responsibility on the part of some clients. Despite detailed documentation, multiple email reminders, phone calls, and text notifications regarding payment deadlines and travel requirements, there were instances where travelers failed to review the information provided. When payments were missed or requirements overlooked, accountability was sometimes redirected toward the agency rather than acknowledged by the client.

Rather than allowing these moments to define the business, JEK Travels used them to strengthen internal systems, tighten client education, and set clearer expectations. Those experiences reinforced the importance of transparency, documentation, and mutual responsibility between travel advisor and traveler. Over time, this approach helped cultivate a client base that values communication, respects process, and understands that successful travel planning is a partnership.

Accountability is just as critical. I take full ownership of my role as a business owner, and I set clear expectations for my clients as well. That mindset has shaped the culture of the brand. When challenges arise, we address them directly, learn from them, and improve rather than shifting blame or cutting corners.

Together, discipline and accountability have made the business sustainable, trusted, and resilient. They are the reason clients return, referrals continue, and the brand has been able to grow with integrity over time.
