Hi Chané, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am the owner and lead planner of Get The Look Wedding & Events, a wedding and event planning company based in Upper Marlboro, MD. I have always dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur and starting my own business! I always knew that one day, I would get the courage and confidence to take the leap of faith and pursue my dreams. Although I knew I wanted to own my own business, I was not able to determine what field of business I wanted to enter.
So, I asked myself: “What do you like to do and what could you see yourself doing?”. After much thought, I realized I wanted to become a wedding and event planner. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, I was a very hands-on bride that enjoyed the wedding planning process. I loved seeing the vision I had to turn into a reality and I knew I wanted to do that for others. In November 2019, I launched my wedding and event planning business! There’s nothing more gratifying than starting your own business!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I launched my business in November 2019, I did not know that we would be entering a global pandemic four months later. As the world began to shut down, so did my new business. After March, I did not have any weddings or events planned for the rest of 2020. While one may have given up, this was the time for me to pull up my bootstraps and get to work! Even though I did not have any events scheduled, I knew I had to do something to get my business off the ground.
For several months, I took online training courses for wedding and event planning and attended seminars of wedding professionals. By doing this, I was able to gain knowledge, skills and even receive advice from those alike. Now that I had the tools to become a successful wedding and event planner, I needed to showcase my talent. During the pandemic, I also put together my first wedding styled shoot, where I planned and designed a ceremony and reception for photographers and videographers to capture. By doing this, I was able to not only showcase my talent, but I was also able to meet and network with some of the best wedding vendors in the DMV! As a result, I was able to gain clientele and build traction for my business. What could have been the end of my business turned into one of the greatest struggles of my career!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the demand for wedding and event planners will continue to rise over the next five to ten years. Potential clients are now realizing how much work it takes to plan a successful wedding or event. We want the results, but we don’t know who to contact or where to start. Instead of trying to figure it out on their own, clients are contacting professional planners to do it for them (which we highly recommend). In addition, the average person is busy working, taking care of their families, etc. Some clients do not have the time to plan their wedding and would prefer to hire assistance.
