Inspiring Conversations with Capricia Sumpter of Capricias Sweet Treats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Capricia Sumpter. 

Hi Capricia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Capricia’s Sweet Treats has been many years in the making, dating back to when I was a child making my infamous grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for my older brother and sister. I loved experiencing the joy of others enjoying my food creations. 

My background is in the arts, this is where I started cultivating my love for fashion. After graduating from Baltimore School for the Arts, I landed an internship with Sean John which then led to a permanent role with the iconic fashion brand. Paying my dues, working my way up from intern to Senior Production Manager, I never forgot my love for cooking and baking. Every time I would bring in my mouth-watering banana pudding, soft and sweet cupcakes, brownies, etc… the whole office would go crazy over them! I would always hear, “you should start your own business.” After serious contemplation and assessing my life goals, I decided the time had arrived to step out on faith. I began to take formal steps to make Capricia’s Sweet Treats official. I already had a great product, I needed to formulate a plan to push it out to the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My initial challenge was how can I stand out from among the other cupcake giants in New York and beyond like Magnolia Bakery, Sprinkles, etc… I thought to merge my two loves Fashion and Baking! Growing up the value of presentation was always instilled in me. The thought process has always been, what can you do to “better your best”. In this specific scenario, how can you stand out from the crowd and catch the consumer’s eye. I have overcome that challenge with creativity and experience.

As I prepare to transition Capricia’s Sweet Treats from a predominantly web base presence, I face the challenge of identifying the most strategic flagship location to expand my brand.

We’ve been impressed with Capricias Sweet Treats LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Capricia’s Sweet Treats is a gourmet dessert company, that prides itself on delivering an excellent customer experience. My brand’s mantra is Love Always… Laugh Always… and Treat Yourself to Something Sweet!

We offer an assortment of cakes in a jar and puddings that are perfect for any occasion. My crown jewel is my Nana’s Banana Pudding, which we offer in sizes 32 oz, 16 oz, and 8 oz. My presence is predominantly online and I ship nationwide. I look forward to growth and expansion in 2022.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During the Covid-19 pandemic the value of Creativity, Hospitality, and an Excellent (Covid friendly) customer experience was reinforced.

The business Community as a whole, was greatly impacted by the pandemic. Which required us to become more creative in order to reach consumers. In spite of the challenges the pandemic presented, Capricia’s Sweet Treats continued to deliver on hospitality and an excellent customer experience.

One of the unique features of Capricia’s Sweet Treats is our Mason Jars. Which are sustainable, and a Covid friendly way to enjoy our sweet treats.
