Inspiring Conversations with Brandon Kelly of Kelly Landscaping and Lawn Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Kelly.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I started landscaping in my early adolescent years and grew to love the outdoors. I worked with a non-profit for six years in the Downtown Baltimore area, and a good bit of my role was leading a talented park maintenance/landscaping team. Throughout my time, I was challenged to revitalize outdoor public parks with the support of my team. Essentially, we revised our entire park maintenance program to ensure that multiple public areas could be enjoyed by everyday folks passing through. After realizing the amount of energy, time, and effort that I invested in landscaping I decided it was time to consider starting my own business. Of course, I encountered and still encounter fears as a small business owner, but I’ve learned to take it one day at a time.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s been a rollercoaster of challenges along the way. Managing a team to handle commercial landscaping is much different than managing residential properties. Transitioning from commercial to residential landscaping was an adjustment. Commercial landscaping involves access to larger budgets, bigger projects, and a fuller team. Now that I am working independently in the residential market, some of the challenges I face are having a limited budget, working with a smaller crew, balancing a full-time job and family, and finding time for self-care. Even with the challenges I can truly say I’m enjoying the journey.
