Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Conklin.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been an enterprising person. During the summer of 2019, my youngest child was turning 16 and we needed a venue for a party. That’s when I was reacquainted with a diamond in the rough- a dance ballroom. This ballroom had been in the community for years and my older child even took dance lessons there at one time. Now under new ownership, the dance participation had fallen and the owner began to rent the space for events on weekends. So, I rented the ballroom for our party.
The owner shared that the venue was more popular as an event space than it was for dance instruction and was more than they could handle. She was looking to downsize the studio and move on from event rentals. I was saddened to learn that this space would no longer be available to the community. To my surprise, the owner asked me to take over her remaining lease and rebrand the venue so the community wouldn’t lose the venue. I declined. The owner was persistent. I thought about it. I prayed about it. I talked to my husband about it. And I prayed about it even more.
God opened doors. God made it possible and easy for me to walk into this business venture. We pride ourselves on being community partners/supporters. We pride ourselves on being a low-cost service provider that provides a brick & mortar space for independent contractors or small businesses. We offer a unique, intimate event space at an affordable cost.
We have begun to plan, host, and bring affordable quality events to the local community while continuing to make our venue available for celebrating life milestones & moments.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In the beginning, it was a smooth transition. The space was already known to be available for events. There was a constant stream of inquiries and bookings. There has been an issue with the rebrand- we have to develop name brand recognition because most locals only know it as a ballroom, not an event space.
The COVID pandemic has been the biggest obstacle. Four months after taking over in November 2019, the pandemic hit and the government mandated shutdowns. As some restrictions begin to lift, our business was impacted by crowd gathering sizes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Vault at Pickwick?
The Vault at Pickwick is a unique and intimate black-owned event space located in Colonial Heights, Virginia. The venue boasts an actual bank vault that has been beautifully decorated.
We offer over 3000 sq. ft. of amazing space to accommodate your special event including a large 2800 sq. ft. main ballroom that boasts a 1600 sq. ft. wood dance floor, kitchen space, office space, and equipment rental.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family is my happy place. I also love working with youth. I love to nurture, guide, and encourage my family and youth seeking a helping hand along life’s journey.
