Alisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins when I was 10 years old, living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. That experience was life-changing, exposing me to a diverse world and instilling in me a deep sense of compassion and curiosity about global cultures. Although I didn’t know it at the time, those early experiences planted the seeds for my future in healthcare.
As I grew older, my interest in helping others evolved into a passion for nursing. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I eventually realized that becoming a nurse was the perfect way to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
In 2019, my perspective on healthcare and community service deepened when I traveled to Ghana for the Year of the Return. While I initially joined a travel group, I quickly realized it wasn’t enough—I craved a more meaningful connection and purpose in my travels. This realization led me to curate my own travel experiences, creating opportunities for nurses and healthcare professionals to engage in philanthropic work.
Today, as the founder and CEO of Nurse on the Move, I’ve turned this vision into reality. My work involves organizing global medical missions to countries like Ghana and Kenya, with upcoming trips to Tanzania and South Africa. I also lead panel discussions and promote health education initiatives. Through these efforts, I’m dedicated to empowering healthcare professionals and making a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While my journey has been incredibly rewarding, it hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the complexities of building a successful business from the ground up. From securing funding to managing logistics for our medical missions, there have been many hurdles to overcome.
Additionally, finding the right partnerships and volunteers who share my vision has sometimes been difficult. It’s crucial to have a dedicated team that is equally passionate about making a difference, and building that team is a continuous process that takes time and effort.
There have also been moments of self-doubt, especially when faced with setbacks or when projects didn’t go as panned. I’ve learned to view these challenges as opportunities for growth, each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of maintaining a clear mission.

My advice for anyone starting out is to give yourself grace and remember that your journey is unique. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, but as the saying goes, “comparison is the thief of joy.” Focus on your own race and pace, and trust that progress takes time.
Networking is also crucial for success in business. Building relationships with others in your field can open doors to opportunities and provide support along the way. Remember that you don’t get an award for doing everything yourself so seeking help and guidance is a strength, not a weakness.
Finally, take advantage of local resources and opportunities for growth. There are often organizations, workshops, and mentors available to help you develop your skills and expand your knowledge. Embrace these resources, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support as you navigate your journey.
