Hi Yuki, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
One of the main reasons I started this scalp care journey is I wanted people to start paying attention to their scalp and hair care as much as they take care of their skin, body and health. I have noticed that a lot of people normally get their facial services, or skincare services done etc. , however they often forget to take care of their scalp. It’s very important to know what types of scalp they have so that they can use proper products based on their scalp types and do scalp and hair maintenances properly. So at our Yuki Luxury Head spa, we offer scalp analysis , customized treatments depending on their scalp types, concerns, and their goals. We also make customized herbal products to add on their home care routines. Depending on their scalp problems and their goals, our clients also need to follow our recommendations for their at home maintenance in order to see the best results. For example: if someone is having hair loss problem, we will recommend to do our serenity ritual head spa package which is our most popular package which includes scalp analysis and customized treatments, at least once a month and we will make customized herbal products for them to use at home regularly. First step, we want to make sure to achieve healthier scalp and we go from there and work slowly step by step. Definitely, we need time and consistency to see the best results of course.
Another main reason I started really into this scalp care and self care business is that I used to have extremely stressful life and also didn’t know anything about taking care of my scalp so I used to have severe hair loss problems and hair patches from stress. I also realized that I stressed a lot more because of these hair loss problems of course. So I started doing research and studying on my own about scalp and hair care. After I started to take care of my scalp, I could see the benefits from it and I could also see the differences it made me feel. Since I went through all these hair loss problems and I could also see how taking care of scalp was an very important role , I started to want to educate and help other people who are going through as same problems as mine. Also I love self care a lot so I wanted to create the environment where you can do self care, relax and solve your concerns at the same time. That’s why we started our Yuki Luxury Head spa in Pasadena, MD where we offer luxurious and relaxing services at the same time, we focus on helping with your scalp, hair and skin needs. All of our beds are luxurious , customized message beds as well so it will be like a full body spa day for our clients every time. I am a professional scalp care specialist and esthetician, have a Bachelor degree in Business management. My husband has a Bachelor degree in Psychology and a Master degree in industrial psychology and my team is full of licensed estheticians and cosmologists so know that you are in good hands as well.
I also used to be a professional poker dealer at night times so my time and energy were very limit back then, 2-3 years ago, I always knew I wanted to start my own business and I only wanted to do what I love to do. So I also wanted to learn in person and when I started doing head spa. it was very hard to look for supplies and resources and it was very difficult to look for someone who can teach me especially in person. The closest I could find back then was in New York and she had good reviews. She is a clinical Trichologist and scalp expert. In order to provide the best quality services for my clients , I decided to travel to New York and learnt from the best. After that I made sure I had enough experiences and skills to take care of people so I decided to have continuous education by taking more online classes for different techniques and one of them is directly from Japan as I wanted to be more authentic . So I did start my business right after that but at the time, I was just renting a room from a salon. Again, I always have a bigger vision for our business so 5-6 months ago , me and my husband, Andy Alba , expanded our business at a new location in Pasadena MD. We are newlywed but luckily my husband is very support of what I love to do and he also has bachelors degree and master degree so he helps me with a lot of our business needs and Yuki Luxury Head spa won’t be where we are at right now without his love, passion and support for our small business as well. I was just taking one client at a time back then now we have a good team and can take up to 3 people at the same time or 6 people or more for a bit longer sessions. We also host Private Birthday Parties, Bachelor Parties, self care activity work shops , have a lot pop up vendors and service providers time to time as we love collaborating so much and support local small business owners. We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a difficult journey since Day 1 for us. Back then when I started, nobody was really offering head spa services which also means that nobody had no idea what the service was about. Head spa is common or popular in Asia but not in the US yet. So it was very difficult for me to find good resources, teachers, equipments and shampoo beds, supplies etc. especially I really wanted to focus on more quality, luxurious and results focused services than just shampoo and conditioner head spa thing like just following the trend. So it costed me way more than nowadays to start this business because everything costed more since the resources were very limited and didn’t really have other options to choose. I also got scammed thousands of money from the vendors . On top of that, the plumbing costs more than normal for us since they are so new to our head spa shampoo bed systems and they need to learn and figure it out again and again about this new plumbing systems and this plumbing systems play a big role in our business. No water, No head spa for us.
Let’s talk about our shampoo beds next. We have tested out different head spa bed versions in order to provide the best quality and relaxing experiences to our clients. In reality , even though the vendors say, the beds are returnable, the shipping fees are on our own and they cost way more than the beds. Same thing goes for their warranty as well, if something happens after its sale transaction, basically we are on our own. Even though we expected these extra cost and disadvantages for us, we took the risk . As I mentioned before, when I started first, I rented out a room from a salon. As a salon renter like me , legally I am 1099 which means I am self employed and I am not their w2 employee or any types of employee. I was still learning about the beauty industry since it was my first experience renting a room out of a salon back then. I was mistreated and taken advantage of. being bullied and racist. We were sharing our scheduling website and everything so I didn’t have a chance to keep my hundreds of clients’ information and all my hard work was gone just like that because they started head spa business on their own and took all of my clients’ informations. I was at my peak at the time since I was the only head spa provider in my area yet I left that toxic environment immediately. And then I took that specific experience as a big lesson, learn from it , grow from it, I took some break from everything, I reset my self . Time passed by, I took a risk again and signed another store front lease on my own this time and the location is still in Pasadena MD hoping my old clients would find me somehow. I also very glad that I went through that kind of bad experiences at that salon back then because I would just be comfortable there and might end up not starting at my new storefront location at all and I would not be able to create drama free, non toxic working environments for my employees and very relaxing and cozy place for our clients. Also this time , I am not alone anymore. I have my husband’s support so at least I am not struggling alone anymore. That’s the start but the obstacles are not over yet. We got new obstacles again. Since we can’t get any business loans because normally they require 2 years business history and we are a bit over only 1 year so we do not qualify for any business loans. We work 2 jobs days and nights, have been using our savings so we do have limited budget. That’s where the new problem started. We can only afford some specific locations for our business as you know these days, everything is expensive. So we chose a store front space in a dead shopping center a few months ago because it was within our budget and it’s still in Pasadena MD just like we wanted. After we checked out the space , we knew it was in a bad shaped but we were hoping it just needed some TLC instead we found out the space had deeper issues like HVAC, plumbing, flooring etc as we go. So we had to take care of it everything from the scratch and the construction took longer than we expected. We could not open our spa when we wanted as we planned and we started paying our rent for couple months already as well. So we decided to open as soon as possible at least in the front area where we finished renovating. Until now, we are still slowly renovating the back rooms as we go. There are a lot of behind the scenes like day to day basic obstacles as well while running a business so the obstacles and challenges while we are running our business is endless. However , when we started at our new location again, we are overwhelmed by the amount of our clients, old and new support and love for us. Until now, to be honest , our employees are well taken care of but Me and my husband are not getting paid as our own salaries. Every dollars we make goes back to the business as we want to make sure we are always providing the premium quality services. As long as our clients and employees are happy, we are happy. We work for our souls and we are very grateful for every sing[e person who is a part of our journey.
