Tejinder, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
DJ Taj Productions really started at home, long before it was ever a business. Our father, Harinder Singh, has been a sound engineer and event professional for over three decades, and my brother Hartaj and I grew up inside that world — Punjabi music always playing, boliyan at family gatherings, speakers and cables stacked in the garage. Celebration was just how our family communicated.
I started DJing because I genuinely loved music, not because I had a business plan. Small gatherings turned into bigger ones, one wedding referral led to another, and at some point the passion turned into a career. Over a decade later, DJ Taj Productions has been part of more than 500 celebrations, including 350+ weddings, across Baltimore, the DMV and beyond.
What has never changed is that it’s still a family operation at its core. Hartaj is our lead dholi and has been performing across North America for over ten years. Our dad is still the heart and soul of everything we do. Around them we’ve built a fully in-house team of DJs, MCs, live dhol players and vocalists who have worked together for years, so clients aren’t handed off to a random contractor on event day.
Today we handle everything from multi-day South Asian weddings — baraat, sangeet, ceremony, reception — to corporate galas, holiday parties and milestone birthdays. We’ve stayed fluent across cultures and generations, moving between Bhangra, Bollywood, Telugu and Tamil music, Afrobeats, Reggaeton, Hip Hop, R&B and Top 40, because reading a room is very different from running a playlist. That’s the part we still love most.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not smooth at all, and I don’t think it should have been. The early years were the hardest. Reinvesting almost everything back into gear before you have the bookings to justify it is nerve-wracking, and being taken seriously as a young DJ in a market full of established companies took time. For a while I was the DJ, the salesperson, the planner, the driver and the guy loading the truck at 2am.
The biggest learning curve was going from being one DJ to running a team. Booking yourself is one thing; being responsible for other people’s biggest days while making sure every person representing your name delivers the same quality is another. We made the deliberate decision to keep everything in-house instead of subcontracting, which meant slower growth and turning down work we could have taken. It also meant we could actually promise the same trusted team at every event, which is why we made that trade.
Weddings are also, by nature, unpredictable. Venues change layouts, timelines slip, power gets tight, families want different things. Over the years we’ve learned to plan for that rather than react to it, so we carry backup equipment, coordinate directly with planners, rehearse transitions and build detailed timelines ahead of time. Most of what looks effortless on the dance floor is the result of problems we’ve already solved once the hard way.

That comes from genuinely reading a room instead of running a pre-built playlist, and it’s why we get booked for weddings where two cultures and three generations are all celebrating together.
Beyond DJing and MCing, we build the full production: premium sound systems scaled to the venue, intelligent lighting and uplighting, custom gobo projections, photo booths, cold sparklers, CO2 cryo jets, dancing on clouds, mobile baraat setups, live dhol and live vocals.
The thing I’m proudest of brand-wise is the planning experience. Every client gets a private portal with an AI-assisted timeline builder, Spotify-powered song requests, a shareable guest request link, do-not-play lists, and their contract, payments and questionnaire all in one place. It replaces the buried email threads and spreadsheets that usually make wedding planning miserable. Combined with backup equipment and contingency plans for every event, it means couples can actually enjoy their own party.
After 500+ celebrations and 350+ weddings over more than a decade, what I want readers to know is simple: we treat your celebration like it’s our family’s, because that’s how this company started.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Spotify is the single most useful tool in our business. We use it constantly for discovery, for building and testing sets, and it powers the song request system inside our client portal so couples and their guests can add requests directly instead of emailing us lists. Shazam is a close second — half of the best songs I’ve added to a wedding set came from hearing something in a room and catching it on the spot.
On the operations side, our own client dashboard has been the biggest change to how we work. Having timelines, song requests, do-not-play lists, contracts, payments and questionnaires in one place means nothing gets lost in an email thread, and it lets us walk into an event already knowing exactly what the couple wants.
Outside of tech, honestly the best resource has been other people. Comparing notes with planners and coordinators we work with regularly, watching what other DJs and dhol players do well, and getting feedback from our own team after events has taught me more than any single book. Growing up with my dad running sound was its own education — a lot of what I know about reading a crowd came from watching him do it long before I ever touched a controller.
