Today we’d like to introduce you to Tania Long.
Hi Tania, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What I have come to realize is that my story for Dimensions Dance Center (DDC) did not begin when I birthed this business; it began when I was a young dancer still training with so much to learn. I danced from age 3 -9. I attended a summer dance camp and there, I had a teacher break my spirit and love for dance. And what I didn’t know was that that was not the last time. The next time, some years later, I had a teacher tell me that Ballet doesn’t look good on Black girls. That was around age 13. I didn’t realize it then, but that is where my story and the birth of my dance studio began! I wanted to be the teacher that I needed at that time. To encourage, uplift, and support all dancers AND I can show up looking just like me. Walking in that is an inspiration in itself and today I still tell this story at each show so that my dance families understand and that the next little girl like me will not be crushed but, be inspired.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all but entrepreneurship is not for the weak! I struggled with finding the people that were for me. I had a horrible experience within my first year of business and I hate to say that for a while it left a dark cloud over me and made me lack trust. I thought I could do it on my own and was afraid to ask for help. I didn’t trust and felt that I HAD to do everything on my own. As time went on, that became old really fast and I felt some burnout. I began to pray for the people to flow into my life that had my best interest and for my discernment to guide me to who needed to be there for me. I am now blessed with the best team so that I don’t have to be present for my business to flow! Best advice… get the contracts done the right way and don’t let one bad experience hover over the moment to experience the rest.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dimensions Dance Center?
We are in our 6th year of business. We offer dance classes for kids age 2 -12 at this time. We had adults’ classes as well but they are suspended at the moment due to COVID. We were able to adapt to virtual lessons during the shutdown which was great but we also could not wait to be back in person! In Harford County, we are one of very few dance studios that are Black-owned and operated. That makes me proud. Also, here, each dancer matters. It feels good that we can provide great dance training and provide a family atmosphere as well. We offer classes weekdays and weekends. Classes offered are Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Tap, and Choreography. We also have an in-house dance company, ELEVATION. They take at least 4 classes per week in addition to a company rehearsal. They travel to perform at places in the community as well.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My determination. I am determined to win. I know what I heard from God. I know what it meant for me and I am going to get it all. Things come my way but I know that it is all working together for my good. The good, the bad, and the ugly… I’m going to keep pushing.
