Today we’d like to introduce you to Siem Abebe.

Hi Siem, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Siem’s Story
Siem was born in Eritrea and spent his early years between Eritrea and Ethiopia before moving to North Carolina in 2001. With a background in biochemistry, he initially pursued a career in science, but his path shifted after relocating to Washington, DC in 2010. There, he led a real estate development company, an experience that deepened his expertise in hospitality and community-focused projects.
Over time, Siem noticed a growing gap in the city’s cultural landscape. While DC was rich in diversity, he felt there weren’t enough spaces that truly felt like home. Places where the African and Black communities could gather, feel represented, and celebrate their heritage. Through his work in real estate, he also witnessed firsthand how historically Black neighborhoods were rapidly changing, with cultural hubs being pushed further to the margins.
Unlike the typical nightlife scene, Siem envisioned creating a “third place” for professionals… a welcoming, inclusive environment that blended culture, hospitality, and community. When the opportunity arose to purchase and develop 1901 9th Street NW, Siem and his two siblings seized it, transforming the space into what is now Sost: a cultural hub where people can feel both at home and inspired.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Challenges Faced
One of the greatest challenges Siem has encountered has been the complex bureaucracy of multiple DC government agencies, and local residents who resisted Sost’s opening, often due to the cultural background of its owners. Minority-owned businesses in the city frequently face hurdles that their white-owned counterparts do not. From permitting to renovations to day-to-day operations, Sost has had to overcome obstacles at nearly every stage of its growth.
Despite these setbacks, the support from the African diaspora has been unwavering and instrumental to Sost’s success. Community members—both in DC and beyond—have rallied around the vision, offering encouragement and patronage. For Siem, that solidarity has been deeply inspiring and a driving force to keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sost, a social hub in the Shaw neighborhood of DC that brings together community, culture, and connection under one roof. We’re home to an all-day café, restaurant, speakeasy, and rooftop, with each space designed to celebrate diversity and foster meaningful gatherings.
We have four levels, each with a different atmosphere. Our Vinyl Room is located one level below ground and serves as a speakeasy (bar + food available), on the ground level is our Café/Restaurant, which is more of a traditional dining experience + all day café, one level above that is our Restaurant which is a versatile and dynamic space for live music, social gatherings, equipped to cater to various entertainment needs, and our Rooftop is a brightly lit indoor space with large windows.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What many people don’t know about Siem is how deeply he values metnal health, fitness, and community well-being. For him, balance and good living start with the same care you’d put into your own kitchen, such as using the best ingredients and creating with intention. Siem practices meditation, stays active, and loves exploring, especially when it connects back to uplifting others.
This philosophy carries into Sost, where every dish is made with quality and love. Beyond food, Siem thrives on connecting with people, sharing ideas, and supporting others in bringing their visions to life. That spirit of collaboration and encouragement is at the heart of what makes Sost more than a restaurant, it’s a true social and cultural hub.
