Hidden Gems: Meet Sameka Dewitt of The Iron Toast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sameka Dewitt.

Hi Sameka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am big cheese and foodie lover, so once I learned there is a National Grilled Cheese Day I just had to express my love for cheese and food. I have been working in the food industry for over 18 years. I thought to myself why not start your own Grilled Cheese trend and incorporate other skills that I have learned over the years and take on even bigger projects. I came across this commissary kitchen named The La Chow located in downtown Baltimore, and I opened up shop in March. I have recently did my first farmers market at Hollins st Farmers market April 18th, and looking to do more pop up and farmers markets. My goal is to keep a classic meal alive and put my own twist to it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some struggles that I have been facing are funding and gaining customers.
Also, just trying run a business and still maintaining everyday life is a challenge until I can hire staff to help out.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in gourmet Grilled Cheese sandwiches. I want people to know that the sky is the limit when it comes to cheese and a classic grilled cheese sandwich, it’s not even funny. I am known for passion, hard worker, superior customer service.
I am also known to be a caring, loving person and a person who is very open to learning new things every day. The concept of doing grilled cheese sandwiches is what I am most proud of and have passion for and that this a black, family-owned business. I am also a mother of two who very much involved into this business. My son created the logo, my daughter is very creative, so a lot of our advertising is hand made from a very creative mind. The Iron Toast don’t just offer unique grilled cheese sandwiches; we are offer job opportunities, knowledge on proper food handling and also gaining those certifications for you to be successful in the food industry. My passion for something sets me aside from others when I have my mind set on something there is no stopping me no matter how long or how hard it is I will do everything in my power to accomplish my goal. I am a firm believer when you have passion then you have success.

What’s next?
Go big or go home I have big dreams for The Iron Toast to be like the new McDonalds and start a chain of The Iron Toast.
My goal right now is to have The Iron Toast food truck and a brick and mortar. For the further I am looking to expand The Iron Toast into The Iron Bar a great lounge place where you can come and relax after hard day of work. The Iron Toast is great for any ages and any race; there is something here for everybody.
