Hidden Gems: Meet Ryan Shutt of RPS Dent Specialists

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Shutt.

Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I went to training and started working for a large corporate dent company after working at carmax as an inventory manager. After about seven years, I resigned from that company as a master technician. They tried to sue me over a non-compete and after spending some time and money with an excellent lawyer, the case was eventually dropped and I was free to start pushing dents. I worked for several years in the automotive industry but always continued to do paintless dent repair on the side.

In 2015, six months after welcoming my first child, I went to my wife and told her I wanted to start my own paintless dent repair company. Two months later, RPS Dent specialists was created.

Now 20 years after attending training for paintless dent repair, I have what I like to consider a successful customer satisfaction-driven business. RPS has been open since 2015 and we are now in 2021 expanding services and growing to offer paint protection film (ppf)and window tint to meet current customer demands.

I have also gotten involved in the paintless dent repair industry in the last five years and I started doing a weekly podcast on YouTube and FB called Dent Digest to discuss industry-specific topics. Many techs within the industry join and or participate.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being sued for a non-compete, having to find a litigation lawyer and spending quite a bit of money. There were positives from these struggles though.

Hiring other dent technicians or people who can learn the art of paintless dent repair is challenging. It’s not an easy job to learn quickly, it takes a lot of time, patience, and practice. Paintless dent repair is not using a plunger like infomercial ads make it appear.

As you know, we’re big fans of RPS Dent Specialists. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a certified paintless dent repair (PDR) technician with 20 years of experience IMI electric vehicle certified.

ARC master technician certified

ARC hail certified

Specialize in PDR but expanding services to include paint protective film (ppf) and window tint. We offer mobile and shop locations for services.

I think the customer experience is priority. I want to create an experience rather than just a repair. Building relationships through the repair process is key to building rapport with clients. I enjoy being able to see people relieved of stress when the repair is completed and the dent is gone.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I used to build cars for Honda corporate for SEMA events and auto shows and had a lengthy tenure in the import car industry that started with a great group of guys and grew over time.
