Hidden Gems: Meet Nikia K. Vaughan of NKVSKIN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikia K. Vaughan.

Hi Nikia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
NKVSKIN was originally curated to add extra income to our household to help for educational purposes for my daughter, Cimone who has Sickle Cell Disease. My family and friends would ask me how I kept my skin looking so youthful after the age of 40, so I decided to bottle up the DIY facial oils that I curated for my own skin.

I made a little website, ordered some bottles, and sold out fifty bottles in two days. My clients were so excited about the oil and then started asking for serums to help with other skincare concerns. So, I enrolled in an online natural skincare course and became certified in natural skincare, and learned how to formulate products to help with skincare concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and oily skin, and anti-aging factors.

My products were actually helping people. After two years of developing my skincare line, I decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in Esthetics School. I resigned from my job of five years and with the encouragement of my husband attended school full time.

I graduated this past May, became a licensed esthetician, and now, I will be opening up my very own storefront this fall via the BOOST Program made possible by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Fearless, and BGE.

I attribute all of this to my faith, my dedication, and to my supportive family, encouraging friends and fellow African- American entrepreneurs and my loyal clients who believed in me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has had its curves and bumps, however, I have a very driven spirit. Most of the challenges came from late nights because I worked full time, I have a family, my husband and daughter have a sickle cell which is a very unpredictable disease (but they do and are doing exceptionally well).

So balancing life with my family and growing was a task. The challenges came from life, growing pains as one may say because I am a one-man show. Developing products, bottling them, doing my own website, marketing, etc. I finally hired a financial officer and an inventory manager to help with my business. This has helped me tremendously.

As you know, we’re big fans of NKVSKIN LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
NKVSKIN is a full facial skincare business that now offers esthetic services including waxing services for men, women, pre-teens, and teens. Our mission is wellness, beauty, and community.

NKVSKIN products are made from love with knowledge in all areas of specific skincare concerns. Not only with our products but now with our services.

NKVSKIN prides our business on giving back to our community. Every quarter NKVSKIN makes a donation to a sickle cell organization for the continued education and awareness. We also educate local Baltimore City Students and families on self-care with local community organizations.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was learning to ride my pink huffy bike without training wheels. My grandmother who raised me would not let me get training wheels. Every day, I would go in the parking lot of our apartment complex and ride without training wheels.

I will never forget the day I peddled and kept going and going and going. This memory is a constant reminder to never give up.
