Today we’d like to introduce you to Nalani Baez.
Hi Nalani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My entrepreneurial journey commenced at the age of 12. As a child, watching my mother and sister do their makeup fascinated me, and I was intrigued by the beautiful nail designs my mother would flaunt after a visit to the salon. Initially, I began by offering hair braiding services to my middle school peers, which eventually led me to save money.
However, I noticed the lack of representation of people of color as nail technicians, which made me want to drive change and contribute in some way. In 2018, I started high school and simultaneously enrolled in a Cosmetology program. Though I initially focused on hair, my love for nail art began to blossom. By 2019, I had decided to pursue a career as a nail technician. In 2020, global lockdowns forced me to invest more time in my passion, and I spent countless hours practicing my craft on myself and my mother. By June 2020, I had begun to take on clients, and since then, I’ve built a clientele base with over 500 satisfied customers.
I named my business Wanderlust Studios, inspired by the word “Wanderlust,” which means the desire to travel. While I’m currently based in Baltimore, MD, I aspire to become a travel nail technician, traveling around the country to share my passion for nail art. Next on my list is Atlanta, GA.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Initiating entrepreneurship at a young age presented several difficulties. From facing skeptics questioning my abilities to the absence of support from some friends and family, and the fear of failure, it was an uphill task. Nevertheless, my love and passion for the venture have been my driving force, propelling me forward.
My mother and younger brothers have been the pillars of my support system throughout this journey. I distinctly recall numerous instances where I broke down in front of my mother, pouring out my heart about the obstacles I faced while building my business. Her wise words and encouragement have been invaluable in keeping me motivated and optimistic.
Over the past three and a half years, I have encountered and overcome many challenges. However, one of the toughest obstacles I faced was the lack of support from some close friends and family, which was heartbreaking. Nonetheless, this experience taught me that not everyone will celebrate your accomplishments. Hence, it’s essential to focus on the people who genuinely support you and your passion.

Wanderlust Studios is a secure haven for both women and men seeking nail services. Sadly, many people are apprehensive about conversing with their nail technician due to negative experiences in low-quality salons. However, I aim to create a welcoming atmosphere where clients can relax and be themselves while receiving high-quality services.
My specialties include an array of services such as Acrylic, Gel X, SNS, Structured manicures, Pedicures, and more. I have a passion for nail art and take pride in bringing clients’ inspirations to reality. My business is renowned for its exceptional customer service, something I take great pride in. As customer service is oftentimes the most talked about in the beauty industry, I ensure clients receive the best treatment possible, starting even before they sit in my chair.
Wanderlust Studios is a brand built on love, passion, and the desire to create a safe space for clients and service providers. I regularly offer incentives for loyal clients and appreciate the love and support I receive from them. Through a loyalty program and soon-to-be-offered membership program, I aim to show my appreciation for their unwavering support.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Passion, perseverance, and persistence have been the driving forces propelling me towards success. It’s my unwavering love for nail art that has kept me firmly rooted in this field, despite the obstacles I’ve encountered along the way. In the absence of perseverance, I wouldn’t have had the fortitude to overcome the challenges that presented themselves.
It’s my unyielding determination to change the perception of the nail service industry that has kept me going, even in the face of adversity. Persistence, too, has played an essential role, as it’s the tenacity to persist through obstacles that have kept me moving forward.
