Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Brunson.
Hi Monica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey when I saw that there was a need for someone to help families navigate the process of discharging from healthcare settings back to home. The healthcare system can be a maze, and if you don’t know the terminology you are comparing apples to oranges. I saw that families needed someone beyond the building social worker to help them and I was simply in a position to help. I worked as an Admissions Director at a nursing home and families needed help figuring out what to do once they were told that mom or dad had to discharge. I began counseling families as part of the customer service that I provided to families in my building, and that grew to a place where I realized I had an entire business idea on my hands. I realized that there was a call on my life to help and Brunson Healthcare Consultants Group was born. 16 years later, here we are offering senior care consulting and helping families to find assisted living care for their loved ones.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Fulfilling but not smooth. The struggles have been very similar to what most small businesses have when they first start. They included being visible in the marketplace, developing relationships, and determining the prices for my services. The road has not been smooth because my business involves convincing folks to make decisions that are hard decisions to make. No one wants to take mom out of her home and place her into an unfamiliar space. A lot of families have made the mistake of promising that they would never do things that they ultimately have to do because if mom is not safe in her home any longer, then we have to find her someplace else to live. So the biggest struggle has been helping families over the emotional hurdle.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an Assisted Living placement agency and senior care consulting business that provides information, insight and support to families. We take pride in knowing the providers that we work with intimately. Our goal is to provide options to families that do not compromise care based on location or cost. We take a very personal approach to finding the location that will be the next best option because often the most desirable option is to return home. I believe that what sets us apart from others is the fact that we do take such a personal approach and we take it seriously. We want the best fit for both of our clients; the family and the provider. We know the providers that we are working with and we want them to be successful. I can say that I’m most proud of the fact that although we are contracted with a small segment of the industry, it’s an impactful segment. The providers I work with take excellent care of the clients that I refer to them. Your family becomes their family.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As an entrepreneur, you have to be a risk taker. Some of us are more calculated risk takers, and some of us just jump right out of the pot and hope we don’t land in the fire. I took a risk when I left a full-time job where I was very successful to start a business that at the time not many independent persons were doing.
For me it was not just a risk, it was a leap of faith. A leap of faith based on what I know was purpose and destiny driven. The risk I took was all a part of God’s plan to put me in a position to help more people.
