Today we’d like to introduce you to Monesha Phillips
Hi Monesha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My desire to open Pandora’s Box over two decades ago stemmed from my interest and affinity for fashion accessories and trends. I’m a strong observer and I have always noticed style movements, often before they hit the mainstream. In addition to staying ahead of trends, it has always been important to me to supply Pandora’s Box with items that evoke a strong message of realness, humor, whimsy, and charm.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a small business owner, the journey been rewarding but it has not come without challenges and obstacles.
Capital has been a major struggle. Operating with less funding means having to be more strategic and resourceful in how I manage Pandora’s Box. Ive had to get really creative( constantly) I’ve faced challenges in accessing the same financial opportunities or support networks that other businesses take for granted. Competing with larger companies, who have more resources, marketing power, and visibilty is another challenge. Being a woman-owned and Black-owned business in a predominately white neighborhood added another layer to that struggle. Ive had to navigate the dynamics of working in a space when my first 10 years there was not much representation or understanding of my story, culture or the value my business brings to the community. Whether it’s dealing with biases, lack of support, or in sometimes micro-[aggressions that come with being a space where I was the minority. It’s not just about the bottom line; its about making a mark, showing what a woman and Black entreprenur can build, andI I am proud of being a part of shifting the community toward more inclusivity.
At the end of the day, the struggles are real, but so are the rewards. When I see my business on the path of thriving, when customers return because believe in me and when I see the impact my business has on the community- those moments of challenges make it work it.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for anyone looking for mentorship or trying to build a solid network find -like minded individuals. Surround yourself with people who share your passion, drive and vision. Build genuine relationships that go beyond exchanging business cards, genuine interest and sharing ideas. Be clear on what you need when seeking mentorship, whether its advice, skills, or just moral support being clear about your needs makes it easier for someone to guide you.
