Hidden Gems: Meet Michelle Nicholson of AllProfit HR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nicholson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all began with a (not so) random phone call. I was an undergraduate student at Bowie State University as an Accounting major. While on break I had a long conversation with one of my mother’s best friends. I shared with her my disengagement and that I was really struggling with the content. Knowing me my entire life, my tia told me that I was not meant to do that kind of work. She was the one who introduced me to the field of Human Resources. Shortly after that call, I did my research on the field and instantly fell in love. As soon as my break was over, I rushed over to the administration offices to change my major from Accounting to Business Administration. It was history from there…I often wonder where my life and career path would’ve led me if I did not have that phone call. Since that time, I have worked primarily for mission-driven organizations. As a child of immigrants, my essence is rooted in mission-driven and social change work. Two of the most prominent motivators in my life are my parents. Their example of perseverance and achievement of excellence in the face of adversity (English as a second language, racism, colorism, discrimination in pursuing their respective health care degrees, etc.) propels me forward to strengthen their legacy and lay a firm foundation for mine. Now, I continue to honor them and live my purpose as the Founder and President of AllProfit HR – where we provide comprehensive Human Resources services with a focus on integrating JEDI principles – Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Whew. That is a loaded question! What I will say is that my approach to HR often requires a unique balance between the employer and employee. Although I help businesses develop strategic plans and achieve goals, I also view myself as the employees’ advocate to elevate their voice as they are the company’s greatest asset. Now, this does not mean companies are held to every feedback shared by its employees; but true growth and achievement cannot be made without its core – the employees. So my greatest challenge is striking the balance between (sometimes) two opposing forces. And if I may say, I do an amazing job balancing the two!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory is from the age of 5. My family and I went on our first trip to Disney World. Although I don’t remember much from that trip, the one thing I do remember is my father carrying me on his shoulders because I was too tired. My father has called me princess for as long as I can remember. The privilege of having an active and loving father (and mother) in my life is not lost on me. That memory, although I was unaware of it at the time, is an example of his endless sacrifice for his family.
