Hidden Gems: Meet Melissa Wohlberg of Breathe Free Physical Therapy & Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Wohlberg.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been a Physical Therapist for 14 years after graduating from the University of Maryland Baltimore with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2007. Most of my career was at Sinai Hospital where I gained experience with many different conditions including Pulmonary Disorders, Stroke, Brain Injury, Vestibular pathology and other Neurological Disorders. In 2018, I furthered my training and became certified as a Yoga Teacher as well as Love Your Brain Yoga and Yoga for Arthritis. I was promoted to become the Integrative Health Physical Therapy Specialist at Sinai where I used this Mind Body training coupled with Physical Therapy to develop a program for Chronic Pain at Sinai Hospital as well as bring Love Your Brain Yoga to their Brain Injury Program.

In addition, I used this proprietary blend with my individual clients that were suffering with Movement Disorders and found tremendous success. During the Pandemic, I was furloughed from Sinai Hospital and was faced with tough choices. As a mother of 3 young kids, they became my priority. When they settled back in school, I decided to research and pursue bringing my proprietary blend of traditional PT and Mind Body strategies to open up my own clinic. I created Breathe Free Physical Therapy & Yoga, LLC in 2020 and found the perfect place to house this business within the Zoetic Wellness Center in Pomona Square. I started with one client at a time and now the company offers a range of services including: Individual Integrative Health Physical Therapy, Yoga to Ease classes for anyone with movement challenges, Workshops both Virtual and In-person for Stress Reduction as well as for Chronic Pain. In addition, I have added a virtual Breathing Workshop for people with Parkison’s Disease that will officially start in September 2021.
My goal is to eliminate the Virtual options and focus primarily on In-Person treatments, classes and workshops as more people become vaccinated.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In general, it has been a smooth road with bumps along the way. I refer to these bumps as a learning curve and I am grateful for everything that I have been learning. The first struggle was within myself to let go and say goodbye to Sinai Hospital and build up confidence to start my own company. There were also challenges with the creation of my LLC, applying for Medicare, billing to Medicare, other Insurance challenges, marketing mistakes, and other small things along the way. I am grateful to have old clients that have contacted me and new clients that have been spreading the word about my new business.

We’ve been impressed with Breathe Free Physical Therapy & Yoga, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like how close-knit everyone is in Baltimore. People that have come to my classes have reconnected after decades and have found comfort in knowing that they are not alone. What I like least about our city is that people can be closed-minded and set in their ways. It is so refreshing when you meet people that have more of an open mind and can accept another view.
