Hidden Gems: Meet Meka Dixon of Baltimore Ink

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meka Dixon

Hi Meka, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
So I’ve always been an artist, always went to different art schools but when I was in highschool I got kicked out went to alternative school I started painting more in my own style. I started painting women with body art, piercings that I liked and that got me into designing tattoos and piercing friends at a younger age. Eventually I did not want to go to college I just wanted to learn how to tattoo. That journey was long and hard. I got rejected from so many, many shops, used for cleaning and dirt work when I finally did get into my first shop then they fired me for not being able to afford to pay off the rest of my 8k apprenticeship, I took a break for a while then met my mentor who was the one to open up the first black owned tattoo shop in Baltimore, Ray at Island City Tattoos. That shop taught me so much and took me in as family, I never looked back. Now fast foward 6 years later, I recently started my own shop, an all black female owned shop also one of Baltimore’s first! I’m just happy and excited for this new chapter and looking forward to bring in job opportunities & art into my community I love where its going so far.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definetly a lot of challeneges. Being a tattoo artist is very hard, it’s a skill that takes years to get good at if you even find the right person to let you in on it in the first place.
