Hidden Gems: Meet Lena Sinex of 3 Gear Games / Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lena Sinex. Them and their team share their story with us below:

3 Gear Games/ Studios is owned and operated by husband and wife duo Lena and Stewart Sinex. After living in Japan for several years, we were called back to the states to help Stewart’s parents run their tabletop game shop, when they retired and closed their business; we decided that there was still a great community of gamers and artists and so we opened up our small business, in the spring of 2019 inside The Historic Savage Mill Mall. Stewart has been in the tabletop gaming industry for 20 years. He has been playing tabletop games since he was eight and even credits Dungeons and Dragons with helping him compensate for his Dyslexia and learn to read. Lena grew up in a geeky and crafty family with a passion for travel and the curation of all things whimsical. She has turned 3 Gear Games into a fun and unique space unlike any other.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a winding path of trial and error to get to where we are today. We started off as primarily a play space and art studio building communities around people’s hobbies. Pre-Covid our space hosted a variety of board game meetups, role-playing games, and even our popular chocolate and paint nights. The paint nights featured chocolates from the local chocolatier and a revolve of talented artists like my mother-in-law Roxana Sinex and my sister-in-law Robin Kinney doing themed acrylic paintings. When the pandemic hit, we had to rapidly change our business model and goals. To continue to keep people together, we started our Discord server to host a variety of online role-playing games and Roxy live-streaming on our Facebook page different painting projects. This has allowed us to reach an even wider audience than we normally would have with players joining our games from all over the world. However, by far, the biggest change has been moving into a more retail-focused direction.  3 Gear Games now has an online shop shipping not only tabletop games but crystals scented D20 candles across the USA. Now that people are more comfortable playing in person, we have a hybrid model of offering games inside the shop and online as well. In the end, our business has continued to see growth despite all the obstacles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about 3 Gear Games / Studios?
It has also been important to us to foster a more inclusive and diverse tabletop gaming industry. We do this through our game room code of conduct and also by supporting diverse businesses like Board Game Brothas a black-owned company that specializes in creating games featuring Hip Hop and Black cultures such as Rap Godz, Hoop Godz and The Fresh Prince card game. Heart Beat Dice a black and LGBTQIA-owned company that does some amazing RPG dice. The Fabled Flame a small women-owned business that makes incredible D20 scented candles and more. We are known mostly for our events such as our board game meetups, role-playing game seasons program, Learn To Play Dungeons and Dragons, and recently for our annual 24hr Extra Life Charity Gameathon which raises money for The John Hopkins Children’s Hospital which raised over $5000 last year. This year we helped sponsor Howard County Pride Festival and became a proud sponsor of Tabletop Gaymers a nonprofit “whose mission is championing the visibility and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community through tabletop gaming.”

In addition to our selection of board games, role-playing games, puzzles, whimsical accessories, and even crystals we offer a variety of services such as board game rentals, team building activities, and RPG / board game private events.

We have a little something for everyone.

How do you define success?
Success like life changes. It’s important that success is something that is not only achievable but also aligns with your goals and values. Being able to take pride in your work and help others is what makes our business a success. The more people we are able to help the more successful we will be and the money will follow which will, in turn, allow us to help others even more.
