Hidden Gems: Meet James Clark of Clark Burger

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Clark

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to Baltimore after college from Canada and starting working my way through the local restaurant scene. I always had hopes of opening my own spot and knew that a “Canadian / Poutine ” inspired concept could be a winner. After teaming up with my brother in law, Scott Donnelly, and landing a great location next to the historic Senator Theatre … Clark Burger was born!
We carved out a niche with fresh burgers, fries & poutine and the local customer base in Govans really embraced us. We are coming up on 10 years and are very fortunate to have developed the friendships and community ties that fueled our small business success.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a family run small business we’ve overcome quite a bit over the years. Restaurant life can have long, stressful hours, but luckily our loyal customers have supported us every step of the way. They’ve been patient through our growing pains, staffing shortages, unforeseen supplier issues, the grind of COVID, etc but we made it together!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Clark Burger?
Handcut Fries + Rich Gravy + Fresh Cheese Curds = Poutine! We are VERY proud to have helped introduce this classic Canadian dish to Baltimore. Combining some good old “Northern Hospitality” with fresh, creative burgers, a full bar & boozy milkshakes, a relaxed and friendly dining environment has allowed us to become a part of our wonderful communities routine.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s always about the people. Your staff, your customers, your family…never take them for granted and always show your appreciation for their support.
