Today we’d like to introduce you to Gbelley Taylor.
Hi Gbelley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began with creativity as both an outlet and a lifeline. I immigrated to the United States as a child during the Liberian civil war. From an early age, I learned to adapt, observe, and make sense of even uncertain environments. Fashion became a way for me to express identity, confidence, and resilience.
That passion evolved into formal education and a long-term career in the fashion industry. I earned a degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and have over 20 years of experience working across design, production, and creative leadership. Throughout my career, I have operated as an entrepreneur, building and contributing to multiple brands, including serving as a partner and Head Designer for an apparel company where I led design direction, production development, and brand execution.
Over the years, I’ve designed custom bridal and eveningwear garments, worked behind the scenes in production, and showcased collections on local, national, and international platforms, including Baltimore Fashion Week, Dayton Fashion Week, and Runway Liberia International.
As my vision evolved, I founded Gbelley Taylor LLC as my independent brand, bringing together custom fashion design, sewing, fashion education, and creative services under one umbrella. My work expanded beyond clothing to include teaching youth and adults practical design and sewing skills, mentoring emerging creatives, and supporting clients through meaningful life milestones.
Today, my work spans fashion design, education, and service-based initiatives, all rooted in craftsmanship, intention, and impact. I remain deeply committed to building work that reflects both experience and purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial strain, burnout, and the challenge of building while simultaneously surviving. There were periods where resources were limited, support was inconsistent, and the pressure to “figure it out” was constant.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning to scale without losing quality or myself in the process. Saying no, setting boundaries, and shifting from doing everything alone to building systems has been a learning curve. I’ve also had to navigate the balancing act of motherhood, leadership, and creativity, especially in industries that often undervalue behind-the-scenes labor.
Those challenges forced me to become disciplined, resilient, and strategic. They also clarified my values and strengthened my commitment to building work that is both impactful and sustainable.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Gbelley Taylor LLC is a creative services and design company rooted in craftsmanship, storytelling, and empowerment. The brand encompasses custom bridal and special-occasion fashion, sewing and fashion education for youth and adults, and creative production services that support individuals and organizations during meaningful moments and milestones.
At its core, the brand is known for intentional design and experience-driven service. Whether creating a custom gown, leading a sewing class, or developing a creative program, the focus is always on quality, detail, and making people feel confident and supported throughout the process.
What sets Gbelley Taylor LLC apart is its holistic approach. The work goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about building confidence, preserving personal expression, and creating access to creative skills that are often overlooked or out of reach. Education and mentorship are just as important as the final product.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust built with clients and communities over time. Much of the business has grown through referrals, word of mouth, and long-term relationships, which speaks to the care and integrity behind the work. I’m also proud of creating programs that introduce young people to fashion and sewing not just as hobbies, but as viable tools for self-expression, problem-solving, and future opportunity.
I want readers to know that Gbelley Taylor LLC is about more than fashion or design; it’s about creating meaningful experiences, honoring individuality, and using creativity as a vehicle for growth, connection, and impact.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d love readers to know that I believe growth doesn’t have to look linear to be meaningful. Much of my work is about honoring process, learning, rebuilding, and evolving with purpose. I’m proud of what I’ve built so far, but I’m equally proud of the resilience and clarity that came from the challenges along the way.
I’m excited about what’s ahead and committed to continuing to create work that uplifts individuals, families, and communities.
