Dionne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins with a delimma. I was at a crossroads in my career. Due to a disability, I was unable to work in a fast paced, highly demanding corporate enviroment. I was desperate to find an opportunity that would allow me to maintain my health, be available for my family and be a help meet to my husband. So we created one.
With a passion for beauty and a desire to help people feel confident, my husband and I started our lash and brow salon, Pop Lash Beauty Lounge, six years ago. We started out as a home based business and quickly grew to a luxury salon located in Columbia, MD. Our goal was to create a welcoming space for clients to enhance their natural beauty.
Initially, I focused on providing high-quality services like lash extensions. Over time, I honed my craft and expanded my offerings to include lash lifts, brow treatments, training courses and curated products like lash serums. My background in mathematics and analytical skills helped me track performance and continuously improve my services and marketing.
Balancing client satisfaction and business growth has been both challenging and rewarding. I’ve built a loyal clientele, created engaging content for Instagram, and achieved recognition in the Howard County community. While most of my revenue comes from services, I’m working to boost product sales and explore collaborations.
My journey is fueled by a commitment to excellence, a love for what I do, and the connections I’ve made along the way. I’m excited for what’s ahead, including growing my business, mentoring others and expanding our product sales.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth but it has been worth it.
The struggle to attract, secure and maintain clients is a daily task. A day off of marketing today means little to no customers tomorrow.
The current obstacle is the new laws in MD that exclude lash artists from doing lash services without being an esthetician. This law will be enforced efffective October 2025. Unless a limited licence is created during this upcoming 2025 Congressional session, we will be forced to close our doors. We are watching the happenings of this law through the Board of Cosmetology and with our State legislators. Both entitites are aware of the severe impediment.

Another equally proud moment was being recognized and awarded by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball for being a positive contributor to the strength of Howard County economy.
