Hidden Gems: Meet Collin Haynes of Development Associates LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Haynes.

Collin Haynes

Hi Collin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Guyana, South America, the third among four boys to a cook and a mechanical engineer. My background growing up in a diverse setting which has shaped my outlook on life. Unfortunately, I had troubling experiences of a diabetic mom and an asthmatic brother which has impacted my desire to be an integral part of healthcare. Upon migrating, I finished up my senior year in High School before enrolling at Washington Adventist University where I studied Biochemistry and International Relations. Afterwards, the path led to attending Loma Linda University where I graduated with an Masters in Public Health (MPH) in Global Health.

Upon graduating my career aspirations took dual paths, an International Public Health and Healthcare Information Technology (IT) Consultant. As a Healthcare IT consultant I was involved in the training, advising and supporting the implementation of
electronic medical/ health records systems (EMR/EHR) for private and government healthcare systems.

The other career path involved planning, implementing, monitoring & evaluation (M&E) of Public health programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS, migrant health, disaster risk reduction and non-communicable diseases in the United States, Latin America and Asia.

A few years ago, during the pandemic, I graduated with a Masters of Business Administration in strategic health management
from the University of South Wales in the UK.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“George Washington, in a speech to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, famously stated, “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair.” It is a quote that regardless of the situations I faced with both personal and professional. Family is the core of my existence. Theres been a fair number of challenges that required at times delaying some career goals to be available for my family and it is a non-negotiable aspect for me.

Professionally, it has always been my goal to build an independent consulting company. Before this I had to assess the Healthcare industry, which meant I had to learn the intricacies of issues involving the business and how to sell our services effectively. It is still an ongoing but I have been grateful for the support of family friends and mentors.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Mentorship is the cornerstone of human development. I could not become where I am today without mentors who have led the way in providing support, guidance and resources to tackle different aspects of my business and corporate career. Selecting a mentor isn’t a one size fit because different mentors come with different specializations. As a mentee you need to be clear with what particular criteria you are looking for in a mentor.

Personally, I have four major mentors along the lines of spirituality, political, financial or economic and business/ logical mentors. Each of these four mentors are excellent in providing direction and has been the cornerstone of my development. Mentors are to provide support but ultimately the decision belong to you the mentee.
