Hidden Gems: Meet Christie Moreira of Hydrangea Haus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christie Moreira. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Christie (Wentz) and Steve Moreira met in Dover, PA in 2017, while working together. A few months later, they found themselves moving to New Jersey to be closer to Steve’s children.

They spent months living in a park model trailer on a campsite where they joined forces to merge their passion and talents to start a renovation and design company in Northern New Jersey, specializing in high-end renovations for homeowners and complete home rehabilitations for investors. While growing their company, Madeira Builders, they were blessed to welcome two children to their family.

After spending years driving hours to visit family, they knew they would love to relocate closer to Christie’s family. In October 2021, they unexpectedly found the perfect home in York. Shortly after moving, they found a location to continue their dreams. They opened Hydrangea Haus in May 2022, a Home Decor Boutique featuring home decor, gifts, fresh flowers, and local products.

Being born and raised in York, Christie had never dined in a Portuguese restaurant. When moving to New Jersey, her world was opened to Steve’s Portuguese heritage and the delicious food that accompanied it. Every Sunday, while in New Jersey, they would drive to Newark, NJ to dine in a Portuguese restaurant. After being back in York for a little over a year, the more they missed Portuguese cuisine. In January 2023, they began working towards launching a restaurant featuring Portuguese Cuisine, Casa de Fogo. They are excited to announce more information soon.

When they aren’t out chasing their dreams, you can find them spending time with their four kids.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Have you ever heard the song, “It’s Been a Year?” Well, our first year has been exactly that – “It’s been three hundred sixty-five of record lows and record highs.”

Starting a new small business is never easy. You put everything into it and pray it turns into your dreams. It has been a lot of learning and pivoting. We have had extremely successful months and months that are just plain defeating. We hope by learning from our mistakes, we can learn and grow from them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Hydrangea Haus, we love to support other small businesses. At our shop, we make our soy candles, prepare fresh flower bouquets (when available we support our local flower farmers), and offer a mix of local and national products.

When shopping at our boutique you will find a variety of local items mixed with national items. We are extremely proud of our ever-expanding local product offerings.

What are your plans for the future?
We are always looking to add local artists and small businesses to our boutique. No big changes planned for the future right now, we hope to stay true to our promise of supporting our fellow small business owners and the local community.
