Today, we’d like to introduce you to Brisha Wright.
Hi Brisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I developed an interest in tax preparation when I observed my tax professional earning additional income throughout the year. Observing her busy schedule and loyal clientele, my own love for math motivated me to inquire about learning the ropes. I hoped to assist her while learning and acquiring valuable skills. Viewing tax preparation as a potential backup plan for my early retirement, I sought guidance from her, but was unsuccessful in establishing an apprenticeship or guidance on how to become a tax pro. Undeterred, I explored alternative paths and discovered a major tax retail company offering classes and employment. I enrolled in their tax preparation class, applying for a position afterward. During this process of learning tax preparation and tax compliance, I uncovered discrepancies in my previous tax returns, realizing my prior tax preparer had engaged in unauthorized – and distinctly fraudulent – activities. This prompted me to rectify years of tax discrepancies and realize that this was a common potential for others who simply provided a preparer their tax documents and trusted the tax return provided to them. Working for that major retail company from 2015 to 2019, I discovered their rigid policies. I wasn’t able to truly form relationships and take the time to focus on my clientele. I couldn’t connect them and guide them in learning the ins and outs of their unique tax situations based on the structure of that company. I decided to take a leap of faith, and after the 2019 tax peak season, I ventured into entrepreneurship. I founded my tax preparation business, which now celebrates its fifth anniversary this April as BWT. Through my business, I’ve cultivated meaningful relationships with clients, empowering them in financial literacy. This journey has evolved from a personal correction to a purpose-driven mission, addressing the broader need for transparent and ethical tax practices.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating entrepreneurship is far from a smooth road—it’s more like a bumpy journey. As the sole operator of BWT, my business feels like my baby, and juggling all responsibilities can be challenging. While I’ve embraced self-automation to ease the load, the early days were a learning curve. Previously, working for a retail company shielded me from the intricacies and responsibilities behind the scenes. I simply followed courses and training to prepare for each season. Transitioning to my own business demanded a different skill set—sourcing, legitimacy checks, and timely task completion became crucial. The absence of a mentor meant I had to navigate this journey independently, relying on extensive research to ensure I was on the right path.
