Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Edekobi.
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, my name is Amanda, and I’m the founder of Amonyé Designs, an interior design business I launched in January 2025. Creating spaces that tell a story is what drives me. We are based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, also known as the DMV. We specialize in residential and commercial projects that are thoughtfully curated, client-focused, and emotionally resonant.
Amonyé is a name that tells my story. It blends my first and middle names. ‘Amanda’ means worthy of love, and ‘Nonye’ in Igbo means be with me. Together, it reflects the heart of what I hope my work embodies: love, connection, and presence. Every space we create tells a story that reflects the client’s personality, lifestyle, and values. We design experiences that feel authentic and lived in, whether it’s a cozy nursery, a luxury home, or a commercial space. Our goal is to blend functionality with narrative, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who experiences the space.
My journey into design began during the pandemic while building my first home. As I prepared to move in, I reached out to designers for consultations. While many were talented, I couldn’t find someone whose vision truly aligned with mine. I decided to take matters into my own hands. Working with a contractor, I brought to life an entertainment space I had always envisioned as the centerpiece for hosting family and friends. That project sparked a passion in me. I began exploring design ideas, curating pieces I loved, and documenting the process on Instagram. To my surprise, people began sending compliments, asking questions, and even seeking advice.
One day, someone DM’d me and asked if I had ever considered turning this into a business. At first, I brushed it off, but encouragement from family and close friends made me reconsider. Around the same time, a friend shared an internship opportunity with DIH Designs for aspiring designers. I took the leap and enrolled in Fall 2024, a decision that laid the foundation for Amonyé Designs..
Since then, I’ve been blessed to design multiple residential properties and am now working on my first commercial project. Along the way, I’ve learned that design is not just about creating beautiful spaces. It’s about storytelling and crafting experiences that feel deeply personal and meaningful. I love helping people bring their vision to life in a way that reflects who they are and how they want to feel in their space.
My vision for Amonyé Designs is to continue expanding across both residential and commercial projects, guided by God’s wisdom and purpose, and dedicated to creating spaces that leave people feeling seen, inspired, and at home.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, but it has been worth it. Transitioning my hobby and passion into a business was a big adjustment. It is one thing to design for yourself, but it is another to price your work, draft contracts, and guide clients through the entire process. With that shift came the reality of wearing many hats. I am the marketer, the accountant, the project manager, and more. Time management became critical as I balanced client site visits, furniture shopping, multiple projects, and contractors, all while still working a demanding 9 to 5. There were moments I felt overwhelmed and questioned if I could juggle it all, but by leaning on God, I found that each challenge pushed me to grow and sharpen my discipline.
Patience, faith, and perfectionism have also been challenges for me. Initially, I wanted everything to take off overnight and often held back from sharing content because I felt things weren’t perfect. Eventually, I learned that nothing will ever be perfect and growth takes time. Holding back only did me a disservice because you never know who is watching or who might recommend your business from the very content you thought wasn’t good enough. Over time, I’ve learned to trust God’s timing, focus on steady growth, and embrace progress over perfection by putting my work out and allowing the process to unfold.
The road has not been easy, but every challenge has pushed me to grow stronger, sharpen my vision, and step more fully into my purpose. What keeps me moving forward is discipline, patience, and staying rooted in God’s guidance. Amonyé Designs is not just a business; it is a reflection of resilience, faith, and the belief that every step, even the hard ones, leads to growth.
As you know, we’re big fans of Amonyé Designs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Amonyé Designs is an interior design business dedicated to creating spaces that are both beautiful and deeply personal. We believe design is more than décor, it is storytelling. Whether residential or commercial, every project is tailored to reflect our clients’ unique journey, blending functionality, comfort, and aesthetics in ways that leave a lasting impression.
We specialize in interiors that blend modern functionality with warmth and storytelling, designing spaces that are timeless, adaptable, and inspiring. Our services include e-design consultations, photorealistic 3D renderings, partial design support, and full-service design and project management, giving clients the flexibility to choose the level of support that best fits their needs and lifestyle.
What sets us apart is our foundation of values: collaboration, adaptability, and aesthetics. We partner closely with clients to bring their vision to life, ensuring every project reflects their individuality and evolves with their needs. In less than a year, we have designed multiple residential projects and our first commercial space, milestones I am most proud of because they show the trust clients place in Amonyé Designs. The best part for me is watching clients walk into their finished space and feel at home in a way they never imagined. One client even shared that their space finally felt like a reflection of who they are, and moments like that remind me why I do this work.
Looking ahead, my vision is to continue growing Amonyé Designs into a brand that redefines how people experience both their homes and their workspaces. Our motto captures this philosophy: “Together, we transform visions into reality, one thoughtfully designed space at a time.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always been someone who could wear many hats and believed I could achieve anything I set my mind to. I was born in Nigeria and came to America at a young age with immigrant parents. In a Nigerian household, the focus was always on education. We were told to “face your books,” which meant classes during the week, tutoring on Saturdays, and church on Sundays. If you got to play at a friend’s house, you considered yourself lucky.
That discipline shaped me early on and gave me a deep appreciation for culture, tradition, and storytelling, which now inspire how I bring meaning into design. Education came first, opening doors for me to earn a B.S. in Information Systems and later an M.S. in Cybersecurity. Nigerians carry an overachiever mindset and a hustle that feels like a superpower. We are taught that anything we do must be done with excellence, that we cannot give up on our dreams, and that success is the only option. That mentality helped me excel academically and professionally, but I also knew something was missing.
Even as I pursued my education, I consistently found myself drawn to creative expression. From an early age, I was passionate about music, dance, graphic and web design, photography, travel, and fashion. I’ve always been a fun and lighthearted person who loves to laugh and enjoy life, but when it came to education, I did not play. That balance of discipline and creativity shaped me into who I am today.
Even though I didn’t know what form it would take back then, I always knew my creativity would play a major role in my future. Looking back now, I see how those early passions, paired with the discipline and drive my upbringing gave me, laid the foundation for the work I do today with Amonyé Designs. Clients trust me because that same mix of discipline and creativity allows me to design spaces that are not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful and personal to their story.
