Hidden Gems: Meet Adriana Michelle of J & A Optimal Cleaning Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Michelle.

Hi Adriana Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Adriana Michelle Arana Flores – I’m 24 years old, but most people know me as Michelle.

I’ve always been the kind of person who figures things out early and learns by doing. I started working when I was about 14, not out of necessity, but because I wanted my own independence – to earn my own money, help my mom, and even be able to buy my own Christmas gifts. My mom always pushed education and structure, and I did finish high school, but college wasn’t financially possible for me at the time.

So I went straight into working and said yes to every opportunity I could find. Over the years I’ve done a little bit of everything – lawn care, babysitting, fast food, university assistant, receptionist, translator, doctor’s assistant, business admin, and construction supply sales.

But through all of that, one thing never changed—cleaning. No matter what job I had, I was always cleaning on the side. At first it was just extra income, but I realized it was something I actually enjoyed and was really good at.

Working in construction supply sales was a big turning point for me. It helped me understand the industry, see my value, and pushed me to think bigger. That’s when it really clicked that cleaning wasn’t just something I did – it was something I could build a business around.

So at the end of 2024, I went all in and started J&A Optimal Cleaning Services. Within a few months, we landed our first commercial property, and we’ve been growing ever since.

Today, we’re a women-owned company serving the DMV area, and something that’s really important to me is how we treat our team. I’ve worked in this industry, so I know how tough it can be. I made a promise to myself that I would never run a company where employees feel undervalued or disrespected.

And now, it’s really come full circle – my mom, who taught me everything about hard work and perseverance, is now my right hand in the business and our operations manager.

She raised two kids on her own and built that foundation for me, and today we’re building something together. That’s something I’m really proud of.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but those challenges were necessary for growth.

Early on, one of the biggest gaps I had to close was around team management and client communication. I had seen in previous roles how quickly teams can become disorganized without strong leadership and systems, and I experienced some of those same challenges myself in the beginning.

There were moments where I took on too much responsibility, even for issues outside of my control, simply because I didn’t yet have the structure in place to properly delegate, track performance, and hold people accountable.

On the client side, I had to intentionally develop my communication and sales skills. Leading conversations, building trust quickly, and confidently closing deals were all things I had to grow into. I made a conscious decision to invest in those areas and treat them as core business skills.

What changed everything was shifting from just working hard to building systems – clear processes, strong communication standards, and a culture of accountability and respect. That’s what allowed the business to become more consistent and scalable.

And through all of it, my faith has been a foundation. It’s helped me stay disciplined, focused, and grounded, especially in high-pressure situations.

Today, those early challenges have become strengths. They’ve shaped how I lead, how I build teams, and how I deliver a reliable, high-quality service to our clients.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A lot of people assume “J&A” stands for me and my mom, but it actually represents my mom’s two kids – me and my little brother.

The “J” is for Jason, who’s 14, and the “A” is for Adriana… which is kind of funny because almost nobody calls me Adriana. Everyone knows me as Michelle.

So yes, my business is technically named after me… just not the name I actually go by most of the time.

It’s a small detail, but it means a lot because it represents my mom, my brother, and the foundation of why I started this in the first place.
