Exploring Life & Business with Ximena Walker of X40 Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ximena Walker.

Hi Ximena, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
X40 Designs began seven years ago with a passion for unique jewelry, creativity, and a desire to build something of my own. What started as a small business has grown into an evolving brand that celebrates artistry, culture, and individuality.

Originally from Colombia, I came to the United States as a young girl. As a wife, mother, and entrepreneur, I have always believed that hard work, determination, and perseverance are essential to achieving your dreams. Life has taught me that success doesn’t happen overnight and that challenges are simply part of the journey. I believe in taking chances, learning from setbacks, and finding the courage to keep trying, even when things don’t go as planned. For me, it’s not about how many times you encounter obstacles, but how willing you are to get back up, adapt, and keep moving forward. I have always believed that dreams are worth pursuing, no matter how long the journey takes.

I have always appreciated the beauty of handcrafted jewelry and the stories behind artisan creations. My vision was to create a business that offered more than accessories. I wanted to introduce customers to distinctive pieces that celebrate cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and personal expression.

Our journey began with local markets, festivals, and pop-up events, where I learned firsthand the importance of building relationships with customers, understanding the retail industry, and creating a recognizable brand.

Over the years, X40 Designs has evolved through different retail experiences, partnerships, and opportunities that have helped shape our business.

One of our most meaningful recent accomplishments was being selected to participate in a business retail incubator program at Bowie Town Center. This opportunity has allowed us to strengthen our retail experience, gain valuable business knowledge, and continue developing our brand in a supportive entrepreneurial environment.

We have also expanded our retail presence through GIFTSIE, where customers can find our accessories at Union Station in Washington, DC, and in Fairfax, Virginia. These opportunities represent important steps toward making X40 Designs accessible to a broader audience throughout the DMV.

Another exciting milestone was being selected to participate in the Baltimore Peninsula Launchpad program in 2026, which provided an opportunity to introduce our collections to new customers and connect with Baltimore’s vibrant small-business community.

As we celebrate seven years in business, I look back with gratitude and pride. What began as a passion has become a journey of perseverance, strategic growth, and continuous reinvention.

Today, we are focused on strengthening our retail presence, expanding our collections, and creating new ways for customers to experience X40 Designs. We also have some exciting surprises in the works that will introduce a fresh dimension to our brand.

Seven years later, I feel that we are still writing the most exciting chapters of our story.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Entrepreneurship is rarely a smooth road, and building X40 Designs has certainly come with challenges, sacrifices, and valuable lessons.

One of the biggest realities I have faced is that having a beautiful product and a strong passion for your business does not automatically guarantee success. Behind every collection, retail display, and event are countless hours of planning, financial decisions, inventory management, marketing, and problem-solving.

Retail has been one of our greatest learning experiences. Over the years, we have explored different retail models and invested in locations that did not always perform as expected. We have experienced the challenges of operating expenses, unpredictable foot traffic, changing consumer habits, and the financial pressure that small businesses often face.

Some of our most difficult decisions involved recognizing when a business model or location was no longer sustainable. Closing a location or changing direction can feel discouraging, especially after investing so much time, energy, and money.

However, I have learned that growth sometimes requires letting go of what is not working to make room for better opportunities.

Another challenge has been balancing creativity with business strategy. I love discovering new collections and creating beautiful shopping experiences, but I have also learned that sustainable growth requires understanding numbers, evaluating opportunities carefully, and making decisions based on long-term goals rather than emotions.

Being selected for programs such as the Retail Incubator has been especially valuable because it reinforces the importance of continuing to learn, seek guidance, and surround yourself with other entrepreneurs.

These experiences have taught me to become more adaptable, intentional, and resilient.

Today, I approach business decisions with a different perspective. I focus not only on growth but also on profitability, sustainability, and building a strong foundation for the future.

I am proud that, despite the setbacks, X40 Designs continues to evolve and create new opportunities.

I have learned that success is not measured by how many doors you open, but by having the courage to recognize which doors are worth walking through.

Every challenge has helped shape the entrepreneur I am today, and I believe some of our greatest accomplishments are still ahead of us.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
X40 Designs is an artisan jewelry and accessories brand that celebrates craftsmanship, culture, and individuality. We specialize in distinctive pieces, including 24-karat gold-plated Pre-Columbian replicas, handcrafted statement jewelry, Tagua accessories, Wayuu bags, and unique creations inspired by Latin American artistry.

What sets us apart is the story behind our collections. We believe jewelry should be more than an accessory. It should reflect personal style, celebrate cultural heritage, and connect customers with the beauty of artisan craftsmanship.

As we celebrate seven years in business, I am especially proud of our growth from local pop-up markets to established retail spaces. Being selected for a retail incubator program and participating in the Baltimore Peninsula Launchpad program have been meaningful milestones in our journey.

We have also expanded our reach throughout the DMV, with our accessories available at GIFTSIE in Union Station, Washington, DC, and Fairfax, Virginia.

What makes me most proud is our ability to adapt, overcome challenges, and continue growing while staying true to our brand’s identity.

Looking ahead, we are focused on expanding our retail presence, introducing new collections, and creating innovative shopping experiences. We also have some exciting surprises in the works that will bring a new dimension to X40 Designs.

Our vision is to build a recognizable brand that celebrates artistry, honors cultural heritage, and continues to evolve with purpose.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice is to surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and encourage your growth. Networking has played an important role in the success of X40 Designs, opening doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and valuable business relationships.

What has worked best for me is staying involved in the local business community, participating in entrepreneurial programs, attending events, and building genuine connections with fellow business owners.

I believe mentorship can come from many places, not just one person. Every conversation and shared experience can offer a valuable lesson.

My biggest advice is to show up, stay connected, be open to learning, and never underestimate the power of a simple conversation. Sometimes the greatest opportunities begin with just one connection.
