Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Cabrera.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my career at Citibank as a personal banker, where I became licensed in life insurance. While buying my first home, my loan officer introduced me to the world of living benefit life insurance and IULs. I was amazed by the power of these tools—but also shocked to realize how few people, especially in the Latino community, knew about them.
That realization inspired me to leave the bank and start my own company to educate and serve families. For over a decade, I’ve helped my community protect their loved ones and build financial security.
When COVID-19 hit, I saw people finally paying attention to how fragile life is. That moment, combined with my own growth through personal development, inspired me to create El Movimiento Despertar Financiero Latino—a platform to empower and educate our community through financial seminars and events.
Later, guided by God, I wrote my book Despierta del Coma Financiero to continue spreading that message of financial awakening and abundance.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. In the beginning, many people—especially in the Latino community—were skeptical. Not everyone believed in me or in what I was offering. I faced many challenges, from clients canceling their policies after hearing negative comments from others, to dealing with chargebacks that made it hard to stay motivated.
I was also recruiting new agents, but many struggled to pass their life insurance license exam, which made it difficult to grow my firm. Still, I refused to give up. I knew my mission was bigger than me.
Eventually, I became an advocate for my community and fought for the life insurance licensing exam to be available in Spanish in the state of Maryland. Thanks to God, my request was approved, and I even received a letter of recognition from the former Governor of Maryland for helping make that change possible.
It wasn’t an easy road—but every struggle helped me grow stronger and more committed to serving and empowering my community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What people should know is that this movement was born from a deep passion and purpose. I realized that so many Latinos were unaware of the incredible benefits of living benefit life insurance. That inspired me to take action and dedicate myself to educating and empowering our community to understand that life insurance isn’t just for when we die—it’s a powerful financial tool for the living.
My mission is to spread this knowledge across the entire United States, because for decades, successful people have used life insurance as a key part of building and protecting wealth—but many in our community simply didn’t know that. I believe God inspired me to create El Movimiento Despertar Financiero Latino to bring this awareness to life through education, events, and empowerment.
I’m proud to be recognized as the first Latina in the DMV area to publicly speak and educate about living benefit life insurance on social media and media outlets. What sets me apart is my charisma and ability to make complex financial concepts simple and relatable—and the integrity, love, and genuine care with which my team and I serve our clients.I’m most proud that El Movimiento Despertar Financiero Latino has become a voice for our community—a movement that’s breaking barriers and changing the way Latinos think about money, protection, and wealth. It’s not just a brand; it’s a mission with heart.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was when I got my first pair of skates. I remember how excited I was, rolling around my neighborhood for hours, feeling so free and happy. The wind in my hair, the laughter, and that pure joy of learning something new—it’s a moment I’ll never forget.
