Today we’d like to introduce you to Swinita Shah.
Hi Swinita, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (M.S., CCC-SLP), licensed in Maryland and ASHA-accredited. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Towson University, then my Master’s in Communication Disorders and Sciences from Baylor University, and completed my clinical fellowship back at my own high school in Howard County (a full-circle moment!). Before opening my practice, I worked across adult rehab, schools, and private practice, and I actually started out as an SLPA during both undergrad and grad school, so I’ve really seen speech therapy from every angle.
Charm City Speech was born out of passion and inspiration. Clinics and classrooms are so important for building speech and language skills, but I wanted to make sure those skills also carried over into the community, where communication really comes to life: at the grocery store, at a birthday party, in a conversation with a friend. No one in our area was really focusing on that carryover, and it became personal for me through my sister. She made great progress in the clinic and classroom, but wasn’t always sure how to carry those skills into the moments where they mattered most, out in the community. That’s what inspired me to build something different — therapy that’s functional, fun, and genuinely useful in everyday life.
Today, Charm City Speech works with both kids and adults across a wide range of needs: AAC, language disorders, feeding, cognition, memory, articulation, and more. We started in Columbia, my hometown, which felt like the perfect place to begin. It’s the community that raised me and my sister, and it’s home to an incredible special needs community through Special Olympics and so many neurodiversity-affirming programs. We recently expanded into a beautiful new Laurel location through a collaboration with Dr. Keyvan Rafei, a local pediatrician and owner of Culex Wellness. Beyond our two locations, we also serve families outside Howard County through telehealth and offer home health visits within the county.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth, but every bump has taught me something. One of the earliest decisions I made was to not credential with insurance — while that’s a hard conversation to have with some families, it allows us to put the client’s needs first instead of letting a reimbursement code dictate the care they receive. That decision came with its own challenges, though: finding families who understand the value of functional, community-based therapy and are willing to invest in it privately, since insurance doesn’t cover this kind of work.
Getting the word out was another big hurdle in the early days. Explaining what “functional communication” even means, and why support outside the traditional therapy space matters, isn’t a quick elevator pitch. It took a lot of community education, relationship-building, and marketing to help people understand the gap we’re filling and why it’s worth investing in. It’s been a learning curve, but every family who “gets it” makes it worth it.

At Charm City Speech, everything starts with the individual sitting in front of us. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy — we believe in meeting each client exactly where they are and building a plan around what matters to them. If a client’s goal is confidently ordering a fries and a burger at Chick-fil-A, that’s exactly what we’ll build our session around. We take their real goals and real motivations and turn them into the foundation of therapy, targeting the same clinical skills our clients need, but in a way that’s meaningful, motivating, and immediately applicable to their life. Families don’t just hear that progress is happening, they see it, in the moments that matter most.
We’re known for being neurodiversity-affirming, client-centered, strengths-based, family-centered, and deeply community-integrated. Every client we work with is treated as a whole person, not a diagnosis or a checklist, and every plan is built around their strengths, their voice, and their world.
What I’m proudest of, hands down, is our team. I have the privilege of working alongside a group of incredibly talented, compassionate clinicians who show up every single day fully invested in our mission of putting clients and families first. They bring creativity, warmth, and genuine skill to every session, designing therapy that’s engaging, meaningful, and fun, while never losing sight of the goals we’re working toward. Watching them build real relationships with clients and families, and watching those families see real, lasting impact, is the thing I’m most proud of about this brand.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about Charm City Speech, it’s this: therapy shouldn’t stop at the clinic door or the classroom hallway. We’re here to make communication functional, fun, and truly life-changing, wherever our clients need it most.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Honestly, I don’t think luck has had much to do with it. If anything, I believe in something more intentional: hard work, good energy, and surrounding yourself with the right people. Every step of this journey has been built on effort, not chance, staying up late figuring out logistics, showing up for families, and constantly asking how we can do better.
That said, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have support from an amazing community and an even more amazing team. From the families in Columbia who believed in this mission from day one, to partnerships like the one with Dr. Keyvan Rafei that helped us grow into Laurel, to the clinicians who show up every day fully invested in our clients, I wouldn’t be here without the people around me. So if there’s any “luck” involved, it’s the luck of being surrounded by good people who believe in the same mission I do.
