Exploring Life & Business with Nuri Muhammad of Chef Stretch’s Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuri Muhammad.

Hi Nuri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My interest in cooking started around the age of 5. While my mom was tending to my younger sister, I was too impatient to wait for what I wanted in the kitchen. I would get my step stool, climb onto the counters, and get my own snacks.

When my family would go on errands, I would pack a juice box, cheese strings, crackers, and grapes. They would look at me in the car and think, why didn’t we think to do that? After school, I watched Gordon Ramsey, Chopped, Iron Chef, and Cutthroat Kitchen cooking shows were my after-school entertainment.  I didn’t watch cartoons I would watch the food network and By 9, I would call my mom who was a single parent at work and ask what she wanted me to take out of the freezer for dinner. Cooking has always been my contribution to my family.  I am doing what I enjoy, and people seem to like it.

• When I graduated from middle school and my sister was still in elementary, it was the first time we had different bus schedules. Her only concern was, who is going to make my afternoon snack for me now? Food is comfort and security as one of our basic needs. I just like to elevate it a little bit and add my own creativity to the dish.

• When I was a teen, I started hanging around some neighborhood friends who were not the best for me. I saw them go down a path and made the decision for myself right then and there, that I was going to use my God-given talent of cooking to make something of myself.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path for me has been up and down. Being a young man starting a business on my own and following my dreams at such a young age. Still has its downfalls at times. But I always stay consistent and always grow. I have worked at multiple chain restaurants and sometimes just felt they weren’t a fit for me. In 2017, I started my own business.

• During Covid, I started making plates and posting on the day’s menu on Instagram and that I would be at a certain location with 20 orders. I would sell out in less than an hour. This gave me more confidence knowing that people really liked my food.  I started getting requests to go on vacation with families to be their personal chefs and to come into their homes and prepare dinner for them on special occasions.

But some of my struggles were working in kitchens and managing my business as well. Also having time to spend with my family while working and being busy for consecutive days in a week sometimes becomes a challenge but they know I’m doing what I truly love to do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
