Exploring Life & Business with Nikita Robinson of Touzled Tressez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita Robinson.

Hi Nikita, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I lived with my Grandmother when I was younger and I had a lot of hair real long down my back and I hope she isn’t reading or Listening. If so love you grandma! She couldn’t do a lick of hair so I started doing my own hair eventually, I started doing my cousin’s hair for candy, sunflower seeds and Ice Cream! As I transitioned into High school, Prince Georges County public schools offer a Vocational Program where I enrolled in 10th grade to be a Cosmetologist at Laurel High School and from there, the sky was the limit. I had an opportunity to have a Caucasian Teacher Mrs. Stansfield who taught me for that first year where she taught me coloring and cutting after that year sadly we moved to Clinton MD, I had to transfer to Crossland High school and took Cosmetology there as well I was then blessed to have an African American Teacher Mrs. Allen where she taught me on other textures of hair! Braiding weaving and so on with having the two under my belt, I couldn’t be stopped!! My clientele base could be multicultural which not too many stylists can do! From there, I went on to graduating with my cosmetology license and going into a shop the name of it was Shazzi Beauty Salon in Mitchellville, MD full time for 26 years! Whewww did some Hair I mean seven days a week 16 hours a day!! That was the best!!

After being there for so long, I transitioned to another shop At the Capitol Blvd where I stayed for three years and then ventured into getting my own salon which didn’t last long because my Landlord was a slumlord!! I moved out of state for a while and then back. I discovered it was time to give back to my Industry and Teach!! I was hired as a freshman teacher at Hair Academy 2 in Temple Hills, MD! The students loved me and I had an impact on them learning and helping them make their dreams come true! My Employer discovered what Jen she had in me and with a couple of months, I was promoted to state board coordinator and job placement in this position. I took their numbers well ratings from really low passing rates to 85-90% students passing The State Board! Every week it was two students then four and so on my numbers with passing were rising by the day! Sadly I approached them to ask for a raise but they declined. So I decided to part ways with them. I was crushed but you have to know your worth!! But That’s when My Now Husband said you are worth more than what they are giving you! So I decided to start booking classes on my own and making wigs with sewing machines, ever since then I haven’t looked back! I have added three other businesses since then now me and my husband are proud owners of Touzledtressezllc which we now have an organic men, women and children hair and body product line with over ten products, Premium Wig &Hair Supplier, a custom clothing line and a Real estate business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was sort of a smooth road with a couple of bumps, no one show or tell you how to do your LLC’s or how to acquire Business credit building and how to venture out of using your own credit for your business! I thought the pandemic was gonna kill us but thankfully GOD made a way to keep our head above water to survive through it! I woke up one day when masks couldn’t be found anywhere!! I got on my sewing machine and started making masks! I don’t even want to tell you how much money I made from that!! But boy, oh boy, I was tired from all the orders that I got! Even with the wigs, I started doing virtual consultations and mailing them out to essential workers who still wanted to look good even tho the world had stopped so that was a blessing,

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Touzled Tressez LLC?
